2 DR Value $$$ VS 4 DR Value $$$

Looking to have some opinions weigh in on the current "market value" difference on 2 dr models vs 4 dr models.  At one time 4 dr models were not worth anything.  And of course 90% of those out there would only purchse a 2 door because a 4 door is a "family" car. That was 20+ years ago.  Maybe the sentiments are still the same ,..??

Just curious on todays market.
I realize that production numbers could come into play ,.. but that set aside,..
If you had two "idential cars", in the same condition, same year, model, engine\trans, milage, and options ,..... on average,...how much more is a 2 door worth than a 4 door?  10%?  25%? 50%? more?

I'd say 50-150% or more depending on the model.

Yes indeed how opinions have changed. I remember a 4-door was a winter car and nothing else.
And sadly, anything green, 2 OR 4 door, was a winter car. You couldn't give a green car away years ago. The only saving grace of a green car was ONLY if it had a black interior. Then a fella could at least sell it for something. And six bangers were totally useless! Laurentians & Strato Chiefs weren't AS nice as the upper echelon models. Boy, if we'd only known then what we know now eh? Then again, ain't it always said hindsight's 20/20? Just finding ANY of the things I've described above nowadays is an out and out treasure.

Ya, I remember in the mid 90s,.... I saw dozens of flattened 4 door 60s Pontiac models loaded on flatbeds headed for the crusher!  Almost every weekend you could sit at the coffee shop and watch the highway tractors roll by with many of these flattened beauties.  Just a shame!
And a 4 door Stato Chief,.... guys were lucky to get $300.00 ,.. for a running, driving car that was still in fairly good shape!

Some of those 50's 4 door hard tops are sweet. Much nicer than the post cars.

mines originally a green 4 door and the interiors not black!! its worth nothing!!LOL!! I would say now 2 doors are still going to fetch more bucks, but i think the mindset has changed a bit as to what is cool. Also, theres not too many of either 2s or 4s so you kinda grab what you can, soon all the real metal will be gone!!nono

1957 Bel Air  4doors seem to go for 10-15 thousand and 2door hardtops are more like 30-50 thousand, so I would say there is a 100-200% difference, on that model anyway. I have thought lately that I would really enjoy a nice 4door  57 Chev or Pontiac.

thats why i got into station wagons, its just a 4dr car that people think is cooler

then a regular 4dr, In reality my 66 wagon is the most solid car , condition wise

i have ever bought (mint undercarriage) and it wasnt very expensive, I would think
a 2dr in same shape would be 100% more . I think people who are car guys

are starting to appreciate 4drs alot more, and they are starting to get more

respect. But a patched up bondo filled 2dr hardtop still probably worth more

then a great original condition 4dr model of the same make. With my kids

and all their associated stuff (junk), i need 4 drs!

I did a survey of the 66 Beaumonts belonging to members of Canadian Classic Chevelle and Beaumonts,as to how many there were of each model etc. There was:
2Dr. Posts=1
4Dr sedan=5
4Dr hdtp=3
2Drhdtp, Customs=9
2Dr Custom convertables=6
2DR Sport Deluxe=29
2Dr. Sport Deluxe Convertables=9 (1 of which was a 396 -4speed car)
I was surprised to see the low numbers on the Customs (a lot of them have been used for parts for SD models I would guess) Also there are exteamley low #s on the sedans and 4dr hdtps.  I am guessing they will become more valuable in the future  if they are in good shape as most of them have been parted out.

I think Todd is correct-but it has always been baffling that someone doesn't even look at a clean 4-door sedan yet buys a rusted 2-door for more $, in the collector car hobby it has always been ragtop-hardtop-sedan. Sedans and other lower dollar investment cars have actually faired very well over the years-when theres more demand do to value the price is higher porpotionally

I think a clean 4-door is great bang for the buck

ya we all want a 2-door big block 4-speed, but its better to be cruising in a clean 4-door with a 6 then dreamn' about the other !

I think the 2 doors always command more money (with the exceptions of 4 dr rags which I think are ubercool like at the begining of the show Entourage.) However, how much more all depends on the model of the car.

Not to get off topic with the thread but is the number of SD's high because they were more desirable to save, or because they are clones?

I totally agree!

I'm always shocked when I see a low milage, rust free, clean original 4 door,,, turn key car for sale and the owner can't even get $3500.00 !  Yet I've seen guys buy rusted out 2 doors for more than that,.... and then dump another $15,000.00 into them,....... knowing that they'll probaly never get their money out of it!
And the $3500.00 4 dr,.... if you keep it in good condition,...you should still be able to get 80%-90% of your money back when you do sell!  And many 2 dr owners ,.. have to bite a $5000.00-$7000.00 loss when they sell.  I've seen excatly that.

Yet,... the 2 dr is always worth more.  I guess that part won't change.

A few years ago I called 4 doors parts cars, as many others did as well.

This forum has made me appreciate 4 doors, especially cars like Mark's Russian Embassy 4 door hardtop.

4 door hardtops just yell "cruiser" to me!!

I have to admit as well, when I am looking at a classic/muscle car I only wanted a 2 door as well. However, if the price was good enough for a four door I might consider it. However, a lot of guys on here with 4 doors that have posted pics seem to have convince me as well. Some guys on this forum here have some bad@ss 4 door cars. I'll admit that.
I can't remember the user name, but  he posted some pics here, I beleive dark green 4 door 1967 Pontiac. That was a sweet car and convinced me to like 4 doors.

Also, like what was said here, can depend on the cool factor. For example, I like the old style 4 door, I don't like that Pimp my ride type pink cars, with hydrolics, and furry dice crap. That some people like to do.

Edit- Found him, It was CDNPONT. That's got the sweet 4 door.  Now thats style. This car here is what convinced me to like 4 doors.

Another thing. I can also remember years ago nobody would thank you for a "post" car of ANY kind either! Everyone liked the windows rolled down and wide open from front to back. Any wonder there's only 1-post car in the Beaumont/Chevelle listing above? As has been said, if you find ANYTHING of ANY description, colour, with or without doors then grab it before it goes to the inevitable resting place. It doesn't really matter HOW rough a vehicle is, there's always SOME little trinket worth robbing off of it; at least I think there is anyways guys.

One thing I like about post cars is you are less likely to get wind noise. For someone who want's into the hobby for fun and not an investment, a 4 door is the way to go. My 54 Chev was a patina'd 4 door sedan and it was one of the most fun old cars I had. I loved driving this car with the 235 and three on the tree.

yes and sometimes the ones that are appreciated less have gone through less abuse, have way less attitude and give you more pleasure with less maintenance.

Thanks for all the comments on the 4 dr value.  It confirms my thoughts.

Does anyone know of an original '64 Parisienne 4 dr hard top in sky blue like this one?

64 Parisienne.JPG

This is the one I bought last year.  The body is in amazing condition!!  No holes anywhere.  At the same time ,...it will need paint.  And to paint a car this size ,... I've got prices of anywhere from $6000.00-$15,000.00.   And the car will never be worth more than $3-$3500.00.  I wouldn't be willing to throw that amount of money at it even if I was in a position to pay it.

This exact model, color and year has a special interest for me.  It's the first used car that I remember my parents owning. So I always thought if I ever came across one in this exact combo,... it would be nice to have one.  I hate to give up on this one ,..because the body and frame literally have no rust,.... but I'd be better off trying to find one thats been tucked away somewhere that does not need any bodywork or paint. (although they may be very far and few in between) Back in the day,.... this combo was very common.  So maybe there might be one somewhere that's been garaged for 20+ years)

I came across a really nice '64 four dr Laurentian sedan with 40,000 original miles. It was near mint,... for only $3000.00.  BUT,...... it was a different color and model,...just not what I wanted.

So I thought I'd throw it out there,....
Does anyone know of a car like this that doesn't need paint or bodywork?  I'm after a sky blue 4 dr hardtop Parisienne with blue interior.  Engine\trans is irrelevant. that I can do myself.

Any other thoughts are welcomed.

Princess Auto sells a turbine HVLP paint spraying system. That would be the perfect car to try it out on. I bought one on sale- still in the box! Someday a car will come along for me to try it out on.
