HI, IS THERE SOME ONE OUT THERE WITH KNOWLEGE ON 66 8.2 DIFFERENTIAL SET UP. HOWL AT 60 MPH. JUST INSTALLED A USED SET OF GEARS FROM ANOTHER 66 HOUSING SO I LEFT THE PINION SHIM IN THAT CAME WITH THE USED SET .THE GEAR SET LOOKS GOOD.
GOT SOME INFO ON HOW TO READ THE GEAR PATTERN , REMOVED 5 THOU. FROM THE PINION SHIM , GOT IT CENTRED ON THE GEAR, 6 THOU. ON THE BACK LASH. SOUNDS OK.
Working for my brother at the gas station he owned when I was 16. Put the guts back in the Ranchero diff like he asked me to. He went for a road test and came back blazing mad at me. Expensive lesson. I never put gear oil in.....

Knda like when I was starting out as a mechanic, the other young guy I worked with put a clutch disc on inside out , the shop owner took it for a drive ,, horrible chatter !!! a few questions and the tranny was coming back out!! the other young guy went on to be a machinist...enough of this mechanical stuff !!

A friend and myself helped another friend put a 396 4 speed in a 66 Camino. We put the disc in backwards too. It's pretty noisy when you do that and depress the clutch pedal with the engine running.
Yet ANOTHER lesson learned.....
