Looking for information on a "283 Super Econoflame"

I've found a small bit of information on the standard "283 Econoflame" but nothing for the "283 Super Econoflame"

Can someone please tell me what kind of cars they came in, the h.p. ratings, or any information about them?

At this point I'm assuming they were 283's with a 4-bbl

Try this link. According to my extensive research on the topic Super Econoflame was a 327 CID V8.

The Econoflame name was used for Acadians and Beaumonts. Your information is helpful becuase it narrows it down to 66-67 but also confusing by showing the Tempest and GTO reference confuse

I will reference 1966 and 67 sales brochures and see what comes out of that for Acadians and Beaumonts. The GTO/Tempest reference is in my opinion just plain incorrect.

1966 Acadian brochure makes no reference to 283 Super Econoflame, just a 327:

There was apparently an optional 283 on the Chevrolet Chevelle that year... did the Canadian versions also offer a secondary 283 ?

Do you have a motor you're trying to identify?.
If so, what stamped #'s are on the forward protruding deck surface area in front of the passenger's side head?.

Seriously... I don't think you don't really want to know. 

BUT... I don't actually have this engine... I am about to do some "creative" decorating on an engine.  Initially I was going to use our standard U.S. 283 valve cover decals... then I found the "Pontiac 283" valve cover decals... then I saw the "283 Econoflame" decals.... and lastly the "283 Super Econoflame" decals are apparently so completely odd that they are going to be perfect for my little prank on all of the SBC know-it-all's in the world.  Funny thing is... now I really do want to know what they were used on originally.  nod.gif

The engine I'm building is a 283 stroker... aka... a "307".  It's going into my 1929 Model A Coupe... painted Pontiac Metallic Blue no less... lot's of high end parts and sneaky tricks under stock valve covers and painted aluminum... it should probably put out between 300-325hp.  I'm also thinking of using L79 valve covers... to really throw folks off.

The SD (Sport Deluxe) models were equivalent to the Chevelle Super Sport trim level, and featured bucket seats and center console, as well as SD body striping and trim. The SD396 models are the most desirable Beaumonts today. Few were built, however, and most succumbed to the harsh Canadian winter climate, which makes them significantly more rare than equivalent Chevelles and desirable to some collectors. The SD series was available in both 2-door hardtop and convertible body styles. In addition to the SD series, the Beaumont line included Custom and Deluxe lines.

The 283 super econoflame was used in 1964 excusivly.

It is for the 220 HP version of the 283.
Commonly known as RPO   L77.

It was the higher horse 283 with a rochester 4GC, clutch fan, and dual exaust.

As far as i know the L77 was used in 1964 only.  and only on chevelles and beaumonts.
This was the highest HP largest engine you could get in a A-body.
Until after march of 1964, when GM made the 327 available in an A-body car for the first time

This should completly answer you question.
My main focus is on 1964 beaumonts/chevelles, and i have done lots of research on the topic.


So the 283 "super econoflame" decals were used only on L77 powered beaumonts in 1964.

I have had 2 canadian 64 wagons with the L77 option.  One chevelle and one beaumont.
So i would say that they did make some in canada, but it is probably not all that common.

My wife loves to descibe my friends as "little". When I'm on the phone with them, she says "the two little 14 year olds are talking on the phone". I'm not sure my friends would like to be called "little" by any women ... after all, size does matter!
