Feedback requested...

Perhaps a trivial question but...

Although my car is in just "average" shape for it's age and even though it is missing the mid section body trim, it does however have most of the other correct/original pieces (ie engine, 2 sp PG, etc).
One item that I have just replaced (and squirreled away the original) is the drivers side mirror which had gone "limp".  At the same time, I'm thinking of installing a passenger side mirror for safety's sake.  Therefore...

Should I have any hesitation in installing a side mirror to this "driver" that did not originally come with one?

Thoughts are appreciated...

It's your car and you get to do what you want. When I make modifications, I ask myself if it could be undone at some point in the future. Might cost time and money, but if it can be reversed, I say go for it.

Every time I drive a car without a passenger door mirror, I feel as though I am partially blindfolded. Never bothered me 25 years ago but I really don't like the feeling now. I have debated the same question in my head as well "do I add a mirror that looks correct in order to help my car survive another 45 years of driving or leave it alone because it originally came this way?" So far I haven't added any mirrors because I don't drive the cars that need the mirrors enough to justify it. I am extra careful and it probably looks like I am a bit obsessive compulsive when it comes to doing shoulder checks when driving the old girls!

I Have also been beating myself up on the same issue..I hate hot having a mirror on the passenger side..my kids even noticed I do way more shoulder checks when I'm drivin the 66..The main reason I haven't done it yet is, I think the mirror on the drives side is sooo small it's almost useless...and if I put the same thing on the passengerr side.......is it going to be worth being there..I need to lean forward to get a good look in the drives side mirror , How am I gona do that on the passengers side?.....I think I'm going to have my wife hold a spair on (her side), If it helps I'm gona bolt it on...If not...no holes to weld up if I change my mind later!!

I put a mirror on my 455 car. The other GTO only has one. I can't back it up to save my life. This coming from a long time truck driver that backed up B trains.
I say put in on. It will cost less to fix two holes in the door than the rear 1/4

I agree with Kim, being a ex tractor trailer driver myself,I'm lost w/out the right mirror. Put one on the 64 Catalina, but still do the shoulder check as well, "cause I don't want the 1/4 wrinkled"!!!!!

They were dealer accessories throughout the 1960's.
And available for installation on both sides.

My 67 beaumont all original lowmiler had original pitted dealer mirrors on both sides right from new.

Whos to say yours didnt come with both at the dealer in 1966biggrin

Thx for all the feedback guys. Sounds like it is unanomous! It's going on tomorrow!

One more question though. I assume that the passenger side would be mounted the very same distance back on the door as the drivers mirror? (Or is there some little known variation that only the die-hard Canadian Poncho guru's know about?)
Thx again all.

PS  The line of the day..."If you don't hav a posi, you will need right mirror, to watch smoke off right tire"...LOL!

My '61 GMC doesn't have a passenger mirror on it either. The driver's side mirror is one of those tiny little circular type of that era. It's easy to check out the back window for the passenger side viewing but sometimes I actually stick my head out the driver's side window to make sure no one is in my blind spot. I too am torn as to whether I should just throw a set of west coast mirrors on it like all my grandfather's old trucks always used to have; on both sides that is.

I'd put one on. My Laurentian doesn't have a passenger mirror and it's a PITA.

I used to have a hard time with drilling rust free floors to install seat belts but I got over that. I ordered a funky set of aircraft style belts for my 58 Dodge.

I mounted mine the same distance from the mirror to the front of the door. Nice to have them even.........

I say just be cautious, ensuring the mirror can be turned in enough to provide the proper visibility from the drivers seat, the vent window can open appropriately, and the pillar between the window & vent window isn't in the middle of your view to the passenger side view mirror.

Thx guys. I'll try to "clamp" it on tomorrow and see what the visibility is like.
Again, thanks for all the feedback...

The points I raised above are from experiences shared by others re passenger side mirrors on Fifty 5-6-7 Chevy's.  While most people just mount a mirror intended for the drivers side, they quickly realize the mirror won't turn in enough to be useful from the drivers seat.  Few people realize a true passenger side mirror is unique, and fewer know how to identify one.  (again, this if for Fifty 5-6-7 Chevy's)

My 67 did not have a rh mirror and the left one was a jobber, replaced the jobber one with an original that i had for the last 7 years and added an oe rh one in exact same place as the lh mirror and both work fine. im not a body man but drilled the holes myself and installed. I have mirror base gaskets if you need some.

Thx for the kind offer, and the feedback, but I was able to pick up a couple of duty free mirrors while I was down in the States.

If a car does not have the right side mirror, I always add one. Safety issue in my view.
