Seeing 'Islander's' problems with his 283 and it's carb made me think of a problem that I had on my Beaumont's 327.Without going into a long winded novel,I'll make it real short.
Anyone who has a problem with the Edelbrock 1406 and a bad,bad dead spot when you tromp on it from a standing start when everything seems like it should be working good, try purchasing an Edelbrock #1475 Accelerator Pump Nozzle Set from your parts place and install the .043 nozzle.I tried everything else and finally called the Edelbrock Tech line and this is what the technician told me to try.
The kit comes with .024,.033 and .043 nozzles.I took out a .031 from the carb.and replaced it with the .043.
The 327 just wails now.By the way,my Edelbrock from the box wasn't set up that great.
