Well boy's I have had it with the oilpatch, I have been in and out of plants for the last 40 years plus, and the Job I was just laid off the other day was the worst job for stress I have ever encountered. So I am going to semi retire and buy myself a small skid steer to clear snow in the winter and get into basic landscaping in the summer months. Just got my wife to agree that I can have some of the money from the proceeds of the sale of my father in laws house so wish me luck
I checked your profile because I was curious as to what age you were. You are the perfect age to be doing what you have planned, I'd say. Casual stuff, enough to pay some bills but more importantly, have "you" time.

My boss just retired in June and he will be 69 in September and he really didn't want to retire. He was not fired but let's say he got a huge shove on the back from our Board. I love him dearly but watching hime hang on until nearly 69 taught me a few lessons.
I'd have to agree with Carl, the time is perfect for what you are choosing. I would love to chat more about this and look froward to meeting you when you are in Ontario next week Bill!
Good luck on the retirement, I have been retired for about a year and a half now and have found myself with no time for part time work. My family seems to keep me in work. But I wish you good luck at it. A part time job would be good though for funds for my Beaumont project.
I'm envious Bill ... all the best in your semi-retirement! Don't work too hard!

I've been retired for 2yrs. now & don't know how I had the time to fit work in to the week!!! All ways something to do & one repair job leads to another around the house or outside. Enjoy it, I'm 63 & can't imagine hanging on till 69 or 70, if I was smarter when younger I "would have, should have" thought more about a job with a pension!!! That's the only "BUMMER" part of my retirement

Congratulations on your retirement and good luck with your nev venture . You will soon find out it is true what most retires say " I do not know when I had the time to go to work".

Congrats on retirement. I've been semi-retired 4 years now. i went from no spare time with lots of money to lots of spare time with no money. I couldn't be happier, busy doing nothing.

That's about the way it would be for me if I retired somewhere around 55. My children have to much schooling ahead for me to consider retirement in the next 4-5 years.
thanks guy's for your encouragement, I am looking forward to it, I realy thing the addition of my skid steer in the next week or so will be great, then to wait for snow
Good for you Bill. I am just a bit envious. Last year when the oil patch was really slow, I decided to take advantage of the sistuation and had myself a "practice run" at retirement. I didn't have any work for over 10 months so I decided to live off of my previous winters earnings before looking for work. It was quite a bit of fun but I am just too young to be retired.... There is no one my age retired and it gets a bit old when everyone else is at work. The other part that I wasn't ready for is the amount of money a person (myself) can go through in a short time. It opened my eyes and made me realize that retirement will take some careful planning since I don't have a company pension. I think the biggest factors for retirement are: 1) being debt free (no mortgage) 2) some form of cashflow (rental property or pension) 3) a garage or shop with all tools for a hobby
An update is in order.... purchased a mustang skid steer today with sweeper and bucket, model 2012 started the incorporation process , finish that process monday having some business cards made having some promotinal materials copied went to the bank for a certified check and paid for the skid steer which will be delivered in the next few weeks

I'm 100% with Pete, best of luck Bill, even if you have to scale back on some of the more expensive things you used to do, taking time to slow down and enjoy life before it flits away (and while you still have some energy to do things!) is the best plan.
Of course it would have been better if the economy hadn't taken a dump (thanks, banking and realator scum!) and lost half my IRA funds ...

Mike, you hit the nail right on the head with your 3 factors. I have the first 2 covered and part of the 3rd, but I'm still working, to bring in $$ to be able to do all the cars I have without dipping into the monthly pension cheque.
