I just closed the deal with the guy today and also bought from him a white 1968 Caprice Estate wagon with the numbers matching 307 and Saginaw 3 spd (on the tree) with overdrive.

This car can be seen in the back of the fleabay photos and is also a dry CA car with protecto plate confirming this very bizarre transmission option.

How many Caprice wagons would have been ordered with the 3speed?

Check out the clutch pedals in the picture - weird!

That IS an odd one. About 15 years ago I pulled an OD out of a 68 Belair wagon, 307.

Are you aware that it will have 3.73 gears? Kinda cool.

I see you guys have ran across some 1968 Caprice Estate wagons w/factory 427's. My dad had a red with wood grain 1968 Caprice estate wagon with a factory 427 that he sold in 1993. I is a long shot but I am trying to find this car, if it is still in existence. The vin number is 16645S199526. Does any one know how many of they were made? Any help or ideas to track this car down would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

I hate to say it - but I have pictures of a 1968 Caprice Estate wagon in red with 427 that was being parted somewhere in the east w/o engine a few years ago.

The car was well optioned, including tach, discs, PW, PL, am/fm 8 track, tilt, hideaways, fender skirts, roof rack, AC etc - it has a TAN interior and looks like it was not a 9 passenger.  Hope that was not yer pappy's car.  Would love to re-unit you with that car.

Only parted one in my life. 1966 Caprice wagon 396 325hp. Engine was stolen out of my dads shed many years ago. Sold the 12 bolt posi 2 summers ago and still have the turbo 400. There was 66,000 miles on the car with little rust

Sad news for me. I wish I would have thought of this sooner. I had my brother in law, who is a cop run the vin. It came back last time registered to my dad in 1993. So the guy must have bought it for the engine, and the car is long gone. Here is a old picture I found of it.

i have a 68 caprice wagon with a factory 427 also, i am trying to find production numbers as well. there were 4071 L36 427's made in 1968 , 1778 ss427 cars , 578 of those were l72 425hp. makes me think the 427 caprice wagon production is pretty low....can anyone else help narrowing it down?

it was mine, i put an L88 427 crate motor in and drove it for a few years, not to much beat it, it had 3:08 posi, 3500 stall, built th400, hooker headers with dual 3" exhaust(at the stock exit) .
