I saw a neat Oldsmobile today

I checked out a 62 Oldsmobile Starfire for sale in nearby Woodstock, Ont today for something to do. It was an interesting car and the owner was just as interesting. "Angus", who looks to be in his late 70's worked as a manager for a UAP store here in Ingersoll for 30 years. He is an Olds fan and bought this Starfire from a fellow in Michigan 20 years ago. He had it painted not long after but needs it again. The car has 59000 original miles. The underneath looked very good. Sadly, the lower doors, fenders and rear 1/4's show signs of filler. I would expect that you'd be welding in new metal once the paint was removed. The interior was decent however the headliner was shot. The center console had a factory tach that worked. The Starfire had the 394 C.I "Ultra High Compression" which is rated at 345hp and 440 ft/lb of torque at 2800 rpm. Compression is 10.5:1! The engine ran very well and had factory dual exhaust. It's a neat old car that I bet moves pretty good. Angus wants $7900 which I felt was pretty high until I checked the price guides. It seems he's right on the money. Angus also said earlier in the year he had the rear brakes including cylinders replaced, installed a new battery, tuned it up, had the brake booster rebuilt and installed a new carb. Unfortunately he doesn't have the original carb which I bet is quite rare.

Here's some pics. Note the old Firestone bias plys!

If anyone has any interest in the car PM me and I'll pass along his contact info. He also has a 68 Delmont convertible for about $9000. It looked solid but the lacquer paint is quite cracked.

I like the shape of the front fenders at the front. Very unique!

Thanks Todd, Starfires were to die for. Iwent to school every day in a 1964 Dynamic 88 394 Rocket, my buddy's family car. There was always something about an Olds high compression mill.

WOW! What a neat old rare find this car is! So intact and lots to work with should someone want to do it up right all the way. You just never see this vintage Oldsmobile around much anymore and especially a 2-door. Wonder if that colour was like, seafoam green or something? It's a beautiful combination all the way around. The ONLY way I'd like it any more would be if it was a raggable top! Yeaahhh.....now yer talkin'; sweet ride!

Dad had a 63 Star Fire coupe, Burgandy with Blk int. 63 was the 1st. yr. of the compound curved back window [curved in 3 different directions] I remember going to the dealer with him, Mum wanted a 4 dr. sedan & Dad kept looking over at the Star Fire. I drove the the living "HELL" out of that car, drag raced it at "Harvey's" [Danforth & Warden] & north of Oshawa on Sat. nights. It was Fast if you figured out how to LAUNCH, 3000rpm brake stand, let the tires roll once on brake release, then "nail it" I surprized alot od guys with that car, if you didn't start that way, the rear tires just went up in SMOKE A few yrs ago I was talking about that car to a fellow I met since moving out here, Larry asked me what colour the car was ,I told him, then he asked if I knew [name witheld] & said yes, & he proceded to tell me that I beat him 3 out of 3 one night with his 65 Chevelle 283 4 spd [220 Hp] well both had a good laugh over that one. Here we have been friends & didn't know we met along time ago!!!!

Love the colour combination. Still fair priced for what it is... and not a "more" door.

Cool on the Harvey's thing too but are you talking the old 1/4 mile run on Harmony Rd. North of Oshawa between the 5'th and 6'th Concessions Dave?. biggrin

Cool car and if you're after one of these great but again there's just soooo many car deals to choose from right now in today's buyer's market!.

The first 1962 Starfire I ever saw in person belonged to a fellow in Ancaster back in 1977. He was importing special interest cars back then. His particular Starfire was silver-gray with that stainless side trim. It had dark red interior with buckets & console. I think they had the last of the old 4-speed Hydramatics before Oldsmobile switched over the TH400. Those things came from the factory with a chambered exhaust system and sounded quite nice with the high-compression 394. Earlier in that same year he had imported a beautiful 1962 Olds F85 Cutlass coupe from Pennsylvania. Speaking of which

A friend of mine has a 1962 Olds F85 Cutlass with a 215 aluminum V8. They were quite rare in Canada, but apparently his was bought new in Kitchener, Ontario by the wife of the president of the Seagrams distillery. When my buddy Warren bought it 20 years ago it had only 17,000 original miles on it. Since then he ripped out the crappy Slim Jim automatic in favor of a 4-speed manual. He now runs a T-5 5-speed manual and has converted it to 4-wheel disk brakes. He is also running a chambered exhaust and Ill tell you, that thing has a loud crackle to the exhaust note! I was in that car today, but searching around I could only find a picture from last year with his old 4-lug Centerline wheels (he since had it converted to 5-lug and updated his wheels).

Pete, yep, did a few runs up there on Harmony Rd, one night from around 12pm to near 4:30 AM before the cops came!!  When I ran against the Chevelle it was up on Island Rd east of Port Perry north off 7A. Jeez, when I think of all the "stupid" stunts we did back then, it's a "wonder" I'm around to talk about it, could have been killed a couple of times,or ended up like a guy from school in a wheelchair for the rest of your life!!  Also ran my 55 Chev on the York/ Durham Line between Uxbridge & Stouffville. We all came out from Toronto to "run" some of us "flat towed" out there, slicks & open headers etc. & some pretty short gears in the back end!!! AH!! the good old days. Now they keep saying "take it to the track" but there are no tracks within a short drive in the GTA  Belleville to the east & London area to the west???
