I sent a message requesting an appointment. Also asked if 455 is original to the car.

Of course we all know it is not. Only the GTO was available with the 455 in 1970. LeMans and Tempest topped out at 400.

This looks like one of those cars I'd want to drag home if I lived close to it. Interior work is no big deal - you can get everything; it's just expensive.

If my memory is still holding up, isn't 70 a 1 yr. car for some trim & body panels?? Seem to remember a fellow near me had one & couldn't get alot of pieces for it,frt. fenders lwr. frt. Valence bumpers, n/plates etc. He finally sold it & said never buy a 70 of that model unless it's all there!!!!!!!!

That is somewhat true on the front fenders, grille and valance. 71 and 72 share most of that as 72 was a carryforward.

In reality the 1973 car was suppose to be the 1972 model but a UAW strike caused GM to just carry foward the 72, so it is just a fluke otherwise 71 would be in the same boat. Now the 73 is a one year only style that presents the same headaches.

Ray I think the 70 fenders are 1 yr. only, something to do with the marker lights?? I know for a fact the trunk emblem is a "One off" + alot of other stuff????????????

The whole front clip is '70 specific. The inner fenders may swap, but I believe that to be it. I am certain that the rad support is different. Other than that it is the same body tub from 70 - 72.

I got a big block 455 from a guy a few years ago for my 79 T.A.. he said it came out off a 70 GTO, is there any way to know if the motor is actually a GTO motor?

In 70 the GTO was the only A body with a 455. Bonneville, Executive, Catalina and US Safari's also could have a 455. Grand Prix could have a 455 and Firebird could have a 455. You need to check the serial number to tell.

Oh by the way I exchanged messages with the seller. I have his number just no time to go look at a non original 455 car with no interior.

Keep us posted on this one. Just an interior kit on a rust free car. Too bad it's so far away.

There will be a two letter code on the block right hand front above the water pump. That will tell you the application.
Example , my 350 in my 70 lemans is YU

This is what i found on the center dome just by thermostat housing..A025 and it has this on the back off the block just above the flywheel..F204 and a space with DN. I couldn't see any #'s on the block above the water pump.

good detective work, those are the date codes, A025 is Jan 2 1975, the block would be Feb 20 1974 .

the block application code is at the front right hand side , just above the water pump.

IF you want to know what heads are on it ? the casting on the center exhaust port will tell you that , it will be  a raised area.  maybe 7H6 ? for a 455 that year?

the seller of this engine told me it was 400, air cleaner sticker says so !!  NOT , it's a 1970 350  2 bbl. engine.

classicalpontiac.com  has help decoding this stuff, under the restorations tab.

That lime 70 looks just like one that belonged to the nephew of a friend back in 1978/79 out in Freelton. Even the wheels look the same although that Freelton car had 15x10 Ansen Sprint wheels out back. At the time it was an original paint Tempest hardtop, Oshawa-built with a 350 2-barrel Chevy & a Powerglide. Around 1979 he painted it orange, put on a GTO hood & ladder traction bars and started messing with the drivetrain. I don't know how or where it ended up.

To get the application code correct you first have to determine the year of casting.
The easiest way is to get the julian date code by the distributor hole. If not you can get way off track with the block code as they were repeated through the years.
If you have a block code of "WT' for example you either have a '66 389 or a '71 400.
Of course it gets a little trickier when blocks were cast in the fall or summer before the model run, but it gets you in the ball park.

Here is what i got for #'s..ok..on the drivers side off the block just in front off the Motor Mount is says 455, couldn't find any #'s above the water pump.. on the passenger side off the block just behind the water pump i got GN9 and right below was DN. The number on the center exhaust port was 5-1 or a 6-1..but it looked more like a 6. .. and on the back off the block by the distributor hole was..485428.
