Langley Trip 2003 008.jpg

Carl it's an interesting discussion as to why we have our preferences. Here is a picture of 8 cars that travelled in convoy from Calgary to Vancouver. We took 2 days to make the trip and had a great time.

This group included:
1951 straight 8/3 spd manual
1954 straight 6/ 3 spd manual
1956 327 tri power/ turbo 350
1967 396/4 spd manual
1967 283/ 2 spd powerglide
1970 350/ turbo 350
1970 400/4 spd manual
1975 455/ turbo 350

We mostly travelled together.

Having said that seventy2plus2 and I would have run about 10 mph faster if we were by ourselves. We might have saved 2 hours driving time.
Does it matter?

Does it matter? Nope laughing.gif

I was born restless and impatient, much like my dad! I guess that just carries over to my driving habits!!!

When I think back, almost every car I have ever kept for any amount of time has had a swap to a bigger engine, including my original 396 4 speed Grande Parisienne getting a (stock) 427 transplant. I just can't help it...

So it doesn't matter what it starts out as, you just want to make it "better".

That is a beautiful photo Rick, just beautiful.

I love having a lot of power under my foot BUT tonight I took my recently acquired  6 cylinder Oldsmobile out on the highway to stretch it legs, after all it has been tucked away in a garage for more than one year. The on ramp is about a 4 minute drive from my house, I get on the ramp and punch it down to merge, look at speedo and it says 145 going to 150, Ooooops Don Valley speed limit is 90 and I just risked having a car I registered just 6 hours before being crushed. (in Ontario 50 over is racing and car can be crushed)  Lift off and let the speedo come down to 100 and cruise along with the rest of traffic.

Oh, I have no trouble with the 6 cylinder power of today. I had an 87 Grand National for about 9 years.

I realize that our next car will likely end up being a V6 front drive but so far I have never owned a front drive and the GN was the only 6 cyl I never upgraded....

It's interesting how we view this stuff. My 2+2 with the 396 was good anywhere. My 396 Chevelle was not good on the highway (3.91 gears) . The 2+2 now has more bore and stroke and I'm not happy (engine gets happy at 3,500 rpm).

Carl, it's 2010, 1987 was 23 years ago. You can't possibly call a 1987 car a car of today....There are many naturally aspirated V6's today that would shame the GN.

Sorry, I'm in a funny mood tonight confuse

I had a 67 GP wagon with a 396. I loved it, as well as other 396's I owned.

Then I put a 427 in that speed car.....................

396's are great but I still think of the 427 as the ultimate big block.

I know, I know, LS6, bla bla bla ...................!!!!

Ray, to me a 1987 is a new car. I am 53 you know. You're just a wet behind the ears kid still...............  BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!  (Yes, I know when your birthday is!!)

I still think of the GTP engines as being very much like the GN engine of long ago.

And there's just something about a Grand National combination, outdated or not.

Oh Carl, you wanted to get me going didn't you.  You guys must have alot more self control because when I had lots of horsepower it cost me big time as in tickets.  Now I don't get any tickets, I can keep my speed to any of todays speed limits plus 10 and enjoy the sound of wind and my stereo.  I may well put in a 283 someday but I am so content with my six and it's not just because of originality, it performs so well.  I'd rather drive a six than for alot of guys to just talk about their big power and it never gets driven.  Just my perspective on it.

I knew I'd step on a couple of toes!!!

I always have played out on the highway away from traffic and spectators, thus avoiding tickets.  Welll, almost always. Had a couple of close calls as a new driver the first year or two being a showoff teenager and learned my lesson.

And Jerel, you are right. I have not driven my Acadian since 1999 and you are enjoying yours, so I can't really talk too much...

However, I do drive my old worn out 94 Impala SS 6 speed every day of the year.

I might as well throw in my 2˘.  I think a car that is nice and unmolested like this one deserves to be kept original.  It's different for everybody, but I still like to see old cars the way they were back in the day, if they are nice original cars to start with.

If it's already been modified, or trashed, or sitting there with no powertrain then that changes everything for me.  I like modified cars as much as original ones, but I'd hate to see a world where there are no longer any original ones left.

Regarding straight sixes, I have owned many over the years and have developed a special appreciation for them.  They are almost nonexistant in today's market, except for some trucks and European brands, I believe.  The straight six is generally smooth and torquey - certainly not a rocket but they provide a different driving experience - from a time when it seemed like we were not all rushing around to accomplish something that I haven't really figured out what it is yet.

There's nothing wrong with an old car that drives like an old car, IMHO.  Again, just my 2˘....

Don't get me wrong here, I love looking at original cars more than anything else.

At car shows, the restored/original cars get almost all of my attention. I spend very little time on the heavily modified cars.

However, when it comes to driving them, I can't help but love the performance side of it much more than stock.

I have originals as well drivetrain wise... When they are not, depending, I do them the way I want them. (most likely never to be sold by me anyways) But like just said, when travelling in a group, it is about the trip and not who finishes first...

Myself, I like to be on the tail end!!!
