In the immortal words of Yosemite Sam "WHOA DRAGON! Dragons is sooo stupid!" YIKES is right
for price! I have to agree with Mike in that I never cared for the '70 model with those gorpy chromed horn holes. That grille leaves everything to be desired as well. It's all a matter of opinion obviously. Just not my cup of tea as I've always liked '69's best and then '66's. Hell, I'd take ANYTHING nowadays though; EVEN a '70 if it was the right price!

THE PRICE ON THIS CAR IS $17,000. NOT $27,000. BILL CLARIFIED THIS IN THE MEMBERS RIDES SECTION AS A MISTAKE SO I THOUGHT I WOULD POST THE CORRECT PRICE HERE.

You know I really have to wonder who these appraisers are that come up with this out of this world values. I like the car no question but how many times do we have to repeat this. In September 2009 I witnessed the appraisal of two original 1970 Canadian Pontiacs, both here in Ontario and both in excellent to very excellent condition, both with engines in excess of 396 cubic inches and both with turbo 400's. The nicer optioned car with smaller engine was appraised at $12,000 and the other was $10,000. I know the owner of this Strato Chief is here on Board but i have to say that $17,000 is easily twice what this car should be appraised at. Sorry if I hurt feelings and what not. These crazy stupid appraisals are just bad for the hobby and everyone concerned.

Another point to remember is that appraisal value, does not mean sell price.
When you sell a vehicle you can only get whatever people will offer. If however, your vehicle disappeared overnight, you would want enough money to get the equivalent vehicle now. The implication is that you need to pry it away from someone who wasn't planning on selling.
If we use my 2+2 as an example.
There were 39 1967 2+2's built with the 396 and 4 speed and that is hardtop and convertible. If mine disappeared tomorrow, how much money would I need to replace that car.
If I wanted to sell the car for cash tomorrow, how much do suppose I could get?
I suspect the difference between these 2 scenarios is in the order of $50k if I paid someone to build me one because I am pretty sure there isn't an existing one.
My appraisal is for more than I could sell it for and less than I could replace it for.

Same here. My appraiser had a few good points. Where would I get replacement parts? How much would they cost. A nose for a 69 Pontiac is about $350, IF you can find one. What about rear 1/4's if I got hit? What would the labour be to fabricate new ones? My rear bumper is like new. A minor hit means $1500 in rechroming if the bumper isn't damaged too badly. If it is, I may have to get a core from out west and have it shipped here. All this stuff ads up. An appraisal that doesn't take this into account would likely bring a lower number and a bigger chance of your car getting written off in a minor accident.

The points about an insurance appraisal are all well taken and understood . It follows therefore that an insurance appraisal is inflated on purpose and therefore has no business being brought into an advertisement to reflect the market value of the vehicle in question.

Insurance is about risk and one's ability to accept it. It is not necessary in my opinion for me to insure against a total loss.  If the law didn't say insurance was mandatory there would be a certain percentage of the population who would accept the risk of not having any.

You are absolutely correct about the concept of appraisal not meaning anything to knowledgeable buyers. I would venture a guess that 80% of the general population don't understand that appraisals can be done differently for different purposes and that an insurance appraisal does not equal expected sell price.

I don't get on enough, I agree, however the asking price of my vehicle is what I want it to be, the actual appraisal price is what the fair market replacement expectation should be, my vehicle is appraised at $14,300, taxes in, do you think it is enough or too much. To date there are no other 2 doors, and the engine block is original, just no longer stock.

P.S Not offended,

Strato7

Same here, the primary factor is always, desireability, if I wanted a 2 door Pontiac I would get one, if I seen the same car in a 4 door would I buy it? I don't think so, how often have we heard that phrase, "thats not a desireable car", to each their own.

In previous conversations, we have been talking about "appraisals for insurance" being just that.. Coverage, for the "replacement" of the car, if its a "total" loss..

You are thinking, in your statement above, that your appraisal is for "fair market replacement value" ?     Is this what your appraiser told you?

It took me a long time to understand the difference in insurance appraisal and market value...

You also stated, that your "asking price" is what you want it to be...  which is absoutely correct.....

What we find out, in each case, is that when we price the car, at a price "we want" it to be, it may not sell, if the market is slow or dead.....

.interesting conversation       You mentioned that there are no other 2 doors  you are referring to 1970 cars?

I can't find another 1970 2 door Stratochief. 3 appraisers were hesitant (wouldn't) to appraise my vehicle because "they really did not have anything to compare it too". One gentlemen did, and stated that he did his due diligence when it came to the appraisal, which I was fine with, although my stratochief was compared to a Catalina and Laurentian?  I also know if sold today I may get 1/2, if I really needed the money, further, our unique vehicles could bring top dollar to someone who really wanted one, I sometimes look at auto appraisal like the real estate, goes up and down and depends on supply and demand but at the end of the day the appraisal is only good for insurance reason, market value is good for when your wife leaves with the MIATA and wants half the 2+2......

Is it still for sale? What are you asking for this car? What do you have to offer with it?  I found one for $7000
are they correct on their price? I'm very interested, please let me know asap.
Thanks,
Rose
