427 Carl Special - 66 Strato

OK it is a four door, but it has four speeds.......

http://qc.kijiji.ca/c-autos-et-vehicules-voitures-depoque-1966-Pontiac-strato-chief-W0QQAdIdZ240536814

and a 396.....bit of a sleeper.

First thing I would do is ditch the Rallye II's and get some big steelies with the dog dishes....

I like that!  And yeah... dog dishes and steelies would be my choice too!

That is a great sleeper car. Gotta love the more doors these days. 25 years ago, not a chance.... today I have four 4dr cars and a 4dr pickup.

Yes I was in La Toque a couple of summers ago and stayed overnite there on the way home from Quebec City. Neat place - Pulp and Paper town.

It was a 3-in-the-tree car first, no doubt making the swap to a 4-speed easier since the clutch was already there.

Who was the guy that ran the late Canadian Classics magazine? Dale Lidstone. I was talking with him at a show years ago when he told me of an oddball Canadian Pontiac he bought used in 1978. It was a factory-built 1968 Strato Chief 4-door with a 396 & 4-speed. It was a trade-in at a local AMC dealer. They fairly beat on it and raped it for the drivetrain in the mid-1980s.

In the U.S. I have seen articles on a black 1965 Biscayne 4-door with a factory solid lifter 396, plus a red 1966 version ordered new with a 425-horse 427 & 4-speed. Have it your way!

Here is a cherry '66 I came across last year. I picture the subject car with the same wheel covers as this maroon one. At least that's how I remember most 4 dr. cars being equipped.

In 1986 I was at a musclecar shootout in Ohio and that red 4 door L72 car was there. It is claimed to be the only 4 door 66 L72 car, and that is a pretty believable claim. Cool car!

A guy I know from Nova Scotia had a REAL CDN built 66 biscayne 4dr L72 4spd car. I do believe it was a cop car he said. He raced it for a number of years and then parted it out. To bad. no

I know where there is a 65 or 66 Strato Chief with a 2 barrel 396 and a powerglide.

It would not have been a 2 barrel from the factory, but that certainly would be an interesting car.

That is the same colours etc, so it's a twin if it's not the car we saw.

I think at that time it had the stock shifter in it but 24 years is a long time to remember so I could be wrong on that.

Pretty sure it was equipped like that from the factory.  My friend that owns it bought it from the original owner years ago.  Apparently this was an option only offered for a short while in whatever year the car is.  Original owner bought the car for towing a camper trailer.

Ok, then it would be a 69. The 69's had a 396 2 barrel. Unless someone shows me something I've never seen/heard of before, that is the only year of 2 barrel big block in cars.

Regardless of year, that would still be a cool unusual car.

Phew that thing has "Cop Car" written all over it.

I am surprised to see the chrome trim on the rear fenders as it is a Biscayne. I would have thought that would have only been on the Bel Air or the Impala.
