decoding engine stamp


ok i got this off the front of the left side block i can t  find it anywhere or how to make sense of it i figure its later edition big block o 339672 y9  any help thx 2brl rochester carb dual exhaust automatic doesnt match vin

Can you confirm your posted #'s are what's stamped on the extended block deck surface in front of the passenger's side head?.
Also please note the casting #'s from the top bellhousing area rear of the block too..

hmm ya its kinda of hard to do the motors still in the car but i'll see if i can get a read of it the number posted was if you were looking at the frontof the engine left side above the timing section

some later big blocks also may have a stamping on the top of the timing cover

looks like it 500557 now does thatmean through my looking into gm codes this is a f body 76 400 185 turbo 350 l-78 z somethin still not jiving

So you have and American Pontiac block ?  What car do you have it in ? Thought you were talking about a big block chevy (canadian Pontiac) engine.

If a Pontiac block your decode looks correct..
Casting 500557 w/ Y9 stamping = '76 400 2 Bolt Main L78 4-Bbl 185Hp w/ Turbo 350 in an F'Body

Thats the stuff Ghost Post.   Just so happens I have the same block in my garage just a different suffix code .  Mine was in a 76 Firebird . Sitting in the garage for years.

the block were discussing is in my 67 firebird 400 i guess someone tried to do a clone? the block has two barrel carb on it is this block even worth redoing or should i yank it and put something a little more powerful in?it is a pontiac block from oshawa

You could always change the intake and carb, upgrade the cam. Check and see what kind of heads you have. Probably 6X heads if stock to that engine. The head code will be on the centre exhaust port. On Pontiac engines the compression varied from year to year with the heads only. The pistons were the same flat tops but the combustion chamber got bigger and bigger as the years went on to lower the compression. If stock 76   6X heads your compression will only be about 7.6 to one. There are a good flowing head but have a large combustion chamber (101 cc). Your 67 would have had a head with a 72 cc chamber.
