Strange sounds...on Corolla
Permalink Closed

Yeah i know, not a Poncho but i have a question.  So the other day after it got really cold here i started out one morning and the rear drivers side was hitting the slightest bumps super hard.  Car doesn't look to be sagging, tire may be a little low but is not flat.  What could it be.  Once it runs for a while/warms up its ok.

Todd should be one of our most qualified to answer, being a Toyota service advisor.

If it's cold enough we've had struts refusing to compress on bumps sometimes, but not usually this time of year.

Sounds like a frozen strut. The fluid leaks out,the water gets in and then winter happens and it freezes.

What year is your Corolla? Is the noise still there? Rear end noises aren't common on Corollas. Camry's, on the other hand...

depending on the year ... some had rear sway bars & some dont

but if it sounds like a double clunk its probably a rear sway bar endlink
if the strut is damp it probalbly a strut
rare ocasions the upper strut mounts can be noisy - it would sound like a tap or   clunk  from up high

This gives a pretty good description of the Diesel Exhaust Fluid...

http://www.fleetguard.com/pdfs/product_lit/americas_brochures/MB10033.pdf

Interesting to note that the stuff freezes at -11C.

PS - I got a special deal on the headlight refill.  They switched out from halogen to Xenon for only $10 more!

It's a 2001. Never had this problem before, never had any work done to rear end, first problem i've had in 10 years as far as suspension is concerned.  Just one clunk one i hit bumps, but it's hard.

The Pontiac Vibe, which is based on the Toyota Corolla/Matrix chassis has not seen these noise issues as far as I know. My Vibe has 172,000 worry free kilometers on it now. I don't have any noise from the suspension even on the coldest of days-yet.

I have a few comments on the D.E.F. (Diesel Exhaust Fluid) ......we sell the stuff where I work. We have had some rigs in for warranty repairs on these systems lately. Mostly from clogged control valves due to "stuff" being thrown into the DEF tanks. The fluid does indeed freeze, but the Detroit Diesel people have designed a farely complex system of eather purging the stuff out of the DEF supply system on each ignition shut down, or a method of "quick warming" of the fluid on cold start ups. Like any new engineering marvel, it will be a while before they get the "bugs" worked out of things. That ensures me full time employment for years to come......which is goodwink.

Purges all the lines after every shutdown so it won't freeze in them over the weekend. It's mostly water but Expensive!!Our next big headache to deal with.Should of bought stock in the DEF people a couple of yrs ago.

wow this thread got hacked ?!

Check the rear sway bar endlinks - they are really prevelent on the 1998-2001 corolla , car has to be on the ground , reach up & give them a tug  .  try that first

believe it or not the Toyota end links are not to badly priced & seem to last longer then the aftermarket ones
