RE: 1969 Pontiac Beaumont ($6500)

I really like the rallye green. A very rare special order paint on a Chevelle.

I really like the crystal turquoise with the white.

As it no longer has the vinyl roof, I don't think the tourquoise and white will look right.

I've decided to go with Windward Blue with double black stripes. Not an original Beaumont colour but it is on the 69 Pontiac palette. The engine was replaced last year...still a 350 but a completely rebuilt one. Also added positrac, power steering and power front disc brakes, new control arms, new shocks and Cragar wheels.

It's finally in the shop for body work now. Then comes electrical and interior. I'm going to get the wiring kit and rewire the whole thing...it's a mess under the dash.

Well, it's progressing. Body work is done...next step is a total rewire then onto the interior.

Now that I'm on PC I can post some pictures. I decided to go for Windward Blue rather than the Rallye Green. Yeah, I know it's a Firebird colour rather than a Beaumont one but my car is hardly original.
The body work took longer and cost significantly more than I had expected. Some of this was due to unexpected problems with the car itself but there were also a lot of extra hours required due to the parts I got from Year One not fitting right. One of the door skins had to be reshaped and one of the fenders wasn't quite right either. I won't be ordering more from Year One.

At least that's over with...now I've started a full rewire using a Painless kit. So far so good.

Neat blog Mark. Gives a little insight into the trials of being on a tour of duty.

In my last post, I showed off the awesome body work my Visa card did on my car during my last rotation. Well, I decided that I had to eventually start actually doing some of the work on the car myself if I wanted to get away with calling it a hobby. The car had a power drain that I couldnt trace because the wiring was a bloody mess from 40 years of idiots like me ****ing with it. So, I drove a perfectly serviceable muscle car back from the shop and proceeded to tear all of the wiring out of it. I had purchased a Painless brand wiring harness/kit and soon discovered that wiring a car is really hard when you dont know what the **** youre doing.

Off to winter storage. I only temporarily broke it. I hope.

The Painless kit was pretty good in that the wires were labeled every 6 inches to tell you what circuit they were forall except one. Yeah, the *****rs left one wire unlabeled and never mentioned it at all in the instructions. There was a note that said to refer to the table on page 34 of their 27 page instruction manual which, not surprisingly, was unhelpful. So, I called their technical support line in, I guess, Texas, and my call was answered by a man I can only assume was named Bubba. I asked about the mystery wire and, in a drawl which, somewhat impressively, simultaneously conveyed both boredom and disdain, he told me ats fer the masta sinda presha sensa.  Being the helpful gent that I am I then proceeded to point out that referring to page 34 in a 27 page manual might be problematic and was met with a disinterested Yahuh. At that point I decided that a discussion of configuration management best practices and ISO 9000 would likely be poorly received. Anyway, I didnt quite get the wiring done in time due, in part, to my inability to figure out how to properly use the expensive crimper I bought. Thanks to Youtube, I eventually found out I had it upside down but, by then, it was time to hop on a plane.

I got the new Painless wiring harness installation well along before I had to go back to work in Afghanistan. I couldn't quite finish it so the car was towed to storage for the winter.
The fuse panel is installed and wires are routed. I used velcro "tape" to secure them into appropriate bundles. Once I have everything hooked up and working, I'll added zip ties to finish it off. The velcro was awesome in that I could undo and redo it as often as I wanted to get the wires bundled and routed in the most efficient manner as I went along.

I agree.  I enjoy your style of writing - you are to the point but add a little humour at the same time.  I suspect that you have to keep your sense of humour to avoid going nuts over there - really makes me appreciate where I live even more and I thank you for that.

LOL about the profanity filter, Todd.   biggrin

Stay safe, Mark, your Beaumont needs you back home!  wink

I didn't notice that when I cut & pasted it. Maybe since I cut & pasted it to here, the CP filter was bypassed?

Ok, I'm now retired and finally getting a chance to work on rewiring this thing. I'm trying to figure out how to connect to the back up light switch on the after market 5 speed transmission. I'm pretty certain I've found the connetion but don't recognize what kind it is. I've attached a picture. Anyone know what connectors I should put on the wires to hook up to this thing?
Also, if anyone has any idea where I might find the neutral cut off switch I'd appreciate it. Is it possible there isn't one?
