What year rear end????

Popped the cover of the rear end in 52!! This chassis is "supposed" to be a 84 Olds Cutlass, which would be a Metric rr. end. The cover bolts were metric [13m/m] but the axles are std. studs for whls??? Frt. discs are metric studs. The crown & pinion have what 'looks like 3:83 written on them in white paint but #'s on C&p [48 -21] come out as 2:28's How do I tell what yr. this rr. end is??? GM # on crown gear is 551340. This ratio won't do for a 5 speed trans. as I think it will stall the engine in 5th. gear at 60mph.???? Looking in Summits book & there seems to be "many"different 10 bolts [ pinion size & # of splines on pinion, & axle length & splines] or do I stay with this ratio & go 4 spd. Gear lube looked fresh, & so do the gears & brgs, What to do,what to do??? Help!!!!!

You need some new twisters!!    I had a 81 Malibu which I installed a 454 stump puller

Malibu had no posi  and 2.29 gears     shocked.gif your Olds rear will be 1984 stock    put some 13 inch radials on it and you will enhance the ratio

Can you take a picture of the cover? I am pretty sure you have a 78-87 style 7.5" ring gear. It will likely be an early one if the axle studs are not metric. For sure the  front end and diff are not from the same year, or someone swapped in wrong year studs!

thanks Carl. will go out a little later & take a pic. of the cover & rear gears. After some thought [that hurts when I do that] I think the paint is a code on gears what I thought was a 3 is a E, so it's E83!! I bought a metric wheel stud but it's too big in the shank to fit axle, will have to have them drilled out . I'm sure someone's been in there, may have older axles??? The whl nuts that I ordered w/the Torque Thrust D's are metric!! Get back to soon thanks Pete

Carl, sent you the email.  13" would give me some more gear but would look strange w/the 15's up front [but would enhance the gasser look] planing on running 245 60's x15 on the back or one size larger if they fit?????

Carl, I did do a "massive burnout" when 52 was at other shop [using better "mig"] as stated before there are no rear brakes so w/foot brake on frts only [cheap line lock] did a burn out the length of shop & up onto trailer!!  Looked "quite impressive" w/wheel wells full of smoke & now that I know only2:29's out back the old 305 must have a little left in her!!!!!biggrinbiggrinbiggrinbiggrin

My son is advertising a 3.73 no posi for a Cutlass right now and nobody even bites at $120. I'm amazed. I figured the gear set alone is worth that.

Rear end I was hoping to get turned out to be a S10, gear set will work but will have to "strip' 2 hsgs. Going to order a gear set from Summit & inst. kit. "ROAD TRIP" coming!! Anybody know if I need any special tools to swap out the gear set other than a press [as Carl refered to] & how hard is it to "CRACK" the pinion nut loose??? Need to heat it ???? Kit comes w/all new brgs, crush sleeve, shims & seal. Going for the 3:42 ratio, think this will be best for the 5 spd. OD trans & still give some "BALLS" to the 52, with a stout power plant in there.?????
