Take the generator to a local auto electrical shop, they should be able to test it, might just need the brushes replaced and a little polishing on the stator

Just a thought, Can this topic be moved to the pre 1958 section, that way it will not get lost in the general lounge section after a few days

Nice car!  Three things to check are the voltage regulator, generator and loose wiring connections.  Most common problems are contacts in the voltage regulator are burnt maybe able to file them clean with a point file (disconnected of course) or the brushes in the generator are worn out and need replacing (have an auto electrical shop rebuild it).

Sounds like its just running on the battery, if you have a volt meter or multi meter check to see how many volts at battery while running. I think with  a 6v system should be around 7.5 to 8 V.   52 chieftain has sound advise with the voltage regulator.

Very nice. I would the very first thing to do with this car before you touch any thing is take a lot of pics of the way every thing is and put then in the library. I doubt there will be another one came along with all the proper decals and the placement of them. If I was you I would also look in to having reproduction decals made and sell them on evelbay if no one else has done it.

Wow what a beauty ! Love those cars, need a close up pic of that hood ornament, that is a trademark for sure.

Hey Bill, you need a parts car ? I have a wreck of one of these at home, it was used for target practise I think long before my time so the body is toast but the engine is still intact and its mostly all there... free for the taking ...

I bet the car may have sat a while without the battery in place, you will need to polarize the generator be for you test output. The car most likely was running on the battery only. Once it it polarize you will need to bring RPM up to 1200 to see the true voltage output.

Great find.
As you've already seen this group is here to help.
Oh yah, we need pics of every part of the car. Especially since its such a low mileage original. We've got lots of learning still to do and get some of our best info from original pics.

Welcome. Nice Car! Yes you might have some regulator problems, try those as stated and  enjoy what you have. But remember when taking off your connections to the regulator remember to jump the correct lines once you have reconneceted every thing to make sure you have the correct polarity for your generator. Ok some one allready stated thanks guys. heres how to jump lines to set polarity.
Take a section of wire that you can hold and bare both ends .Then just for a moment jump both the "BAT" and the "GEN" terminals on the regulator. This allows a surge of current to flow through the generator from the battery to create the correct polarity for the generator. If your Generator allready had reverse polarity and was used it can damage the contacts in the generator, and will need repair. If you saw the generator showing a charge on the guage then I doubt that its running in reverse polarity. But you will need to do this any time you take all the terminals off the regulator.
IF from what you say is that the battery is discharged from a long drive and the genearator lessens its charge during a drive this is not uncommon but to me it points toward the regulator not working correctly. It should know if the battery is loosing charge and allow the generator to recharge as needed.

Sweet looking car - I've got a 51 too !!!! They are a blast to drive. Done some updating (T5, open drive rear axle, dual brakes etc.) and love spending time cruising the backroads.

As far as the center grill portion, my plastic insert was clear, not the red you normally see, so I've added a light in behind it that comes on with the parking lights - put an amber bulb in it and I think it looks kinda cool.

Enjoy !!!!
