Trade a 72 challenger 340 slapsick original and 67 cornet 440 for gto

Both cars run great..and lookin to trade for a older gto. the only diff from the 440 from rt is the hood, has full tail lights. the 67 has the 318 maxwedge. the 72 has a 340..im looking for an older gto to rebuild.

Don't mean to go all Mopar on you, but if the 318 is the original '67 motor it would be the "wide" polysphere 318 (as opposed to the later ['68 and later in Canada] 318 LA-series motor that has a smaller exterior appearance than the polysphere and looks the same as the 273 that was also available in '67).

The Max Wedge was a big block 426 ci high performance engine (meant for drag racing) that was offered around '62 - '64.  FWIW, the easiest way to tell a Mopar big block (B or RB series) from a 318 polysphere or LA series is that the big block has the distributor on the front and the 318 has the distributor at the rear.

For the Challenger, the fifth digit of the VIN will tell you if it was an original 340 car or not.  There are lots of "340" cars out there that are actually 318s, and it makes a big difference in collector values.

If you type in the vin on this site:

http://www.stockmopar.com/mopar-vin-decoder.php

it will decode your VIN for you.

OK, enough Mopar talk for now and good luck!

There is a guy selling a '66 Sport Fury for a long time on PEI. He says it has a 318 "wedge" engine in it ... WRONG ... it's a 318 "Wide block" or "Poly" or "Polyspherical". I went and saw it.

Check it out ... http://www.usedpei.com/classified-ad/1966-Plymouth-Sport-Fury_6625257

Its the 440 maxwedge..in the car...not the 318...they also had a 413 maxwedge.

They never made a 440 max wedge - only 426's and 413's, and the 318 poly was made until 67' in canada, 66' in the US.

Sorry for the Mopar stuff, but it might help set the record straight.

Allpar contradicts itself in that article, saying they stopped using them in both 66' and 67'. I have factory service manuals from chrysler canada that list the 318 poly in 1967, and have seen them in several cars.

It was a canada only thing, as they stopped using them in the US in 66'.

I didn't see where it contradicts itself, but it does clearly state: "The A engine was built through 1967, actually, with 1966 being the last year in the U.S. and 1967 in Canada."

I didn't take the time to carefully read through each web page but thought they cover the topics fairly well.   I've noticed the Mopar world seems to have more misnomers among people than the other brands.  I've heard so many people talk about their cousin's "383 Hemi Six Pack Max Wedge" over the years...  I guess it's like all those "4 bolt main" 350s out there with a "3/4 race cam"....  biggrin

No biggie really, it's all in fun and all part of the hobby that we know and love! smile

It exists in every hobby. If you want to get the mopar guys all flustered - do something like I am doing and drop a SBC into a mopar! Pisses them right off!

Don't mean to hijack the thread too badly, but what is your project?  I'm intrigued already!

Stuff like that ticks off the purists, but not the hot rodders.  Seems to me there's a thread on here somewhere of a '67 Beaumont that's receiving a Viper V-10 and I've seen pics elsewhere of a '69 Camaro with a big-block Mopar in it.  I think stuff like that -the unexpected- is pretty cool in itself.  After all, it is a hobby and it's supposed to be fun!

57' Plymouth with an LT1 and 5 speed. It already has a 350 swapped into it, so its an easy swap.
