RE: Red River Manitoba Flood 2011 thread

It's amazing that now we have to watch a commercial before we can see the flood cam!

I know, doesn't that suck?

On a happy note, it's looking more likely I'll be able to drive out of here before the swap meet on the 15th. Having a road back by that time would be great, for a number of reasons!

Not much dry land around for birds, so the robins just had their convention here! It may not show up but there had to be at least 75 of them on the island!

Wow, we just had the biggest mink I've ever seen. He walked along the shore in front of the house. Cool, that will help our mouse issues!

Haha, not a chance! It's a riot watching those things fighting over a nice fat worm! I'm still amazed how they yank them right out of the lawn.

Sure was cool to see that big mink though. Now I know what's been moving my mouse hotel around.

If they keep hanging around, you'll need a worm transplant when it's all over! biggrin

This guy took to the water just like a mink.

Yup, that was him exactly. Very big rear section. He was one solid animal, and long too, much longer than I'm used to seeing mink.

Those may be the starving cousins of the guy I saw John! He was soaking wet, fresh from a swim and that made him shiny and black too.

I just walked the driveway and took a bunch of pictures of it. I was barely ready for how bad it looks!

However, when we were thanking God for our meal and our day at suppertime, it occurred to me it's only our driveway. I have had so much bad news from the area this week with health concerns and even deaths that I when I walked the driveway I was thinking how blessed I am, not how bad off I am.

Here's what wind and waves can do:

It could have been a lot worse. Lucky for us, the CPR line is just west of our driveway and held back a lot more nasty stuff. It kept the waves smaller too.

The view south towards Morris, some road starting to show at least.

The view north towards Winnipeg. Same, but a ways to go yet! Straight down the road, that little speck is my truck, on the first dry ground on the other side of the water. That is a mile. In 2009 it was 3 1/2 miles so this is luxury!!!

It's at least nice you live in an area where you can park your truck in a remote area and not have it stolen!

Haha, the thieves better have boots! I thought of that when I parked it in such a way that it was just a bit messy to get to it! If they would be at my truck when someone drove up they are blocked and I've heard thieves like to make sure they have an escape route. None there!

Carl,
Is it starting to recede? Talked to Merle Friesen at the car show yesterday. he said Howard's was still dry. Must have been darn close.
Hope your driveway's not too bad under that mess.
Gary

Yes, it's going down right now and yet 20 miles south is up 4" past 24 hours. Go figure....

I have not talked to Howard but his shed must have been very very close. Even if it missed it was still best to move all the stuff out.

Well, that was something I've never seen before in 5 floods. The wind blew so hard for so long our water had dropped to about 10-11" below peak. Now tonight we are back 2" below peak. It came right back up except a little bit. Talk about disheartening...

But it's still only water and it WILL go away eventually.

And yet another inch returned over night. This morning when I got up and went out to check, we were only 1" below the crest. Sad, it seems like it's going to take forever to go away this time.....

However, the day turned out rather amazing. I got to work my usual (late) time since I am boating and taking our son out for school. My boss immediately came to me and asked if I would be interested in a plane ride this evening, as his son who is a pilot was coming to town. My boss was renting a plane for the evening so his son could fly him over the flood area. Need he have even asked???!!!

I hurriedly rounded up a borrowed video camera (thanks to my flooded out neighbour) as well as a digital camera to use, since of course my cameras were here on the island and I was out for the day.

Anyhow, 6:00 tonight I got to view it all from the air for just over a half hour! What fun! And as an added bonus, he had time to take my wife and both kids up as well. Neither of our kids had ever been in a plane before, so that was really cool. Should have seen their faces when they came back! They are 16 and 14, so will remember it well.

I've said it before and will say it again, I am amazed at what a boss I have. He did this for 3 employees at work. The other two are in the flood zone but just managed to escape with road access the whole time.

It was a great finish to a day that didn't start out so great.

Hopefully I will be able to post some pics (and maybe video) if my neighbour is able to post them online for me to pull off.
