Hood Trim Debacle


Just joined the forums and am currently doing a frame-off restoration on a really solid '50 SD 2271 that I have owned for over 35 years, most of which has been in storage. It's a long story but I sent out my orig. hood trim (as a pattern) along with a longer NOS American version that I acquired with the intention of getting back a good re-chromable re-sized NOS unit. Short story is both got lost!!furious

Here's the first question- did any US Ponchos use the shorter hoods found on the Cdn. 115" WB chassis cars? All the trims I've found so far in the US for sale have been long ones- difference being about 8".

Second question is : Does anyone have a shorter 54" version for sale???

It's very sad,

 

the shorter hood trim is canadian only, but I think the US one could be corrected to the good lenght to match the hood, mostly easily..

That's what I was afraid of! Yes I can modify a US version as I already had done. It involves repositioning the mounting brackets and cutting the back end shorter. The trick is folding the back end down to get an OEM finish- then of course re-plating.

Anybody got a decent guinea pig they want to part with??confuse

I have read that the only difference is the ornament holes are different and that the metal type may have changed in '51 from steel to stainless.

Either way I'd be more than happy smile to work with a '54 if you can spare it. Send me a PM.

is a 1952 any better?found this one on kijiji-barrie,complete hood and trim 100.00. ad #278023342.He has a couple trunks too that look really good as well.

Wow- those look good. Definitely closer than a '54 now that I look at pictures from my '42- '56 #445 chassis parts book.

The pattern is similar on '50- 52, but it looks as if '51 and '52 may have slightly different rib widths than the '50.

I've emailed the seller for more photos.

I finally got the gent on the phone.  He said 49, 50 & 51 are all different, and actually he needs a better one for his 51.  Fortunately, he confirms the hood trim is not unique to a sedan delivery, like year cars all used the same front clips, so as long as you fine something for a 1950 Canadian Pontiac you're set.    

He'll poke around his stuff, and talk to a buddy of his who is also into the early 50's Canadian Pontiac's, and let me know how he makes out.

Thanks for that lead 52Chieftan. Interestingly enough my brother-in-law owns the major auto dismantling yard (Belsum) in Dawson Ck. He probably knows the guy. I'll definitely contact him.

 I finally made contact with lowrider49 and it looks very promising. He has a hood marked 1950 from an old wrecking yard and we are just confirming that it's the right year before he takes the trim off. I've got both fingers and toes crossed that it's a good replateable item.

STILL LOOKING!! 

Lowrider has dropped out of site and doesn't seem to check his PM's. I have my local sources trying to track him down in Dawson Creek and am still hopeful, but if anyone else has any ideas on a trim let me know.

Here's a picture I snapped hastily in Kona, Hawaii as it drove past. It is a 1949 Chevy though.

Wasn't 1950 one of the only years that Pontiac made a sedan delivery in the U.S. on a U.S. chassis?

Actually 1949 was the first year and they went up to '53. The production runs were low like Canada. Year. U.S. Cdn. Total 1949. 775 225. 1030 1950. 1362. 939. 2301 1951. 908. 1314. 2222 1952. 541. 1931. 2472 1953. 468. 2038. 2506 4050 units. 8252 units Cdn. Production of sedan deliveries ran from 1938- '74 with a total of over 17532 units. (no data for 1939) No wonder everyone here wants my 'nifty fifty'! source: Old Cars, June 1992 I'm looking forward to finishing the restoration and driving down to the beaches here in Malibu just to make the surfers droooool!
