Non HEI Distributor for a HO350?

Engine guru's...dist newb checking in.

I have a base Gen1 SB Mallory HEI on my HO350. Should do the job, no problem at all. Even the dist. gear will work with my cam. But the damn thing is so big and friggin ugly. A 14" breather hits it. I hate it.

Ok, a 10" breather will clear...but it looks wimpy underhood and flows about 1% less.

I'd like a dist. thats more compact. What would you suggest for a Vortec 350? I'm cool with a external coil. In fact I'd prefer it. I just hate that big coil cap.

Cheers, Mark

Actually I just wanted to post !

No help Mark, sorry, but I agree with you. I hate the look of an HEI but I keep it to myself. Everybody loves them, I never run them. I'd rather have points!

XR-i
Heres the easiest conversion on the market. Simply remove the old points and condenser, install the XR-i on the supplied adapter plate, and run a couple of wires. Everything fits under the OEM distributor cap so you retain a restoration-perfect factory look. The XR-i is the industrys first points conversion to have a built-in adjustable rev limiter (4000 to 8000 RPM) and its fully sealed from moisture and dirt. It delivers pinpoint accurate ignition timing and can provide improved fuel economy. Available for most 1950s through 70s applications with single point distributors.

Why is that Carl? I have new points to install, but I'm also pondering an aftermarket electronic conversion under the stock cap.

Just because of the appearance, big and bulky. I am considering a Pertronix for my Acadian, or maybe this new Crane one listed above, which I hadn't heard about.

As far as performance and reliablility, I like HEI's.

I have the Crane kit installed in my 69 inside the original distributor and it works amazing. I have had too many problems with Pertronix and was recommended this Crane kit by Dale at Dale's Muscle Cars. I am still using a stock coil with no issues. I may not have the optimum ignition for racing but I'm not racing.

think i'll be getting 2 of these. the hei is pretty damn close to the firewall in the 55. and the beaumont doesn't have room for hei with the tunnel ram.
