250 Headers & other stuff

Hi All; I've spent a few evenings in the garage this winter working on my 63 Invader.

I've taken out the 194 and put in a 250 that has been rebuilt and should make some horsepower. It is a motor that was raced in this area back in the 80s and I had it refreshed.

The car was a 3 speed on the column and I removed that also. I am using the turbo 350 that was in the old Nova that used to race with this motor.

I plan to eventually cut the floor for a ratchet type shifter which I hope will fit in front of the bench seat.

I have 2 problems at this time. The Hooker headers I have were truck headers I think because they are too long and stick down too far. They also won't fit in because of the steering box being in the way.

I have seen various headers advertised for the inline 6s but many seem to wrap under the motor. There are also Clifford shorties available.

Has anyone had any experience with fitting headers onto a 6?

Also, the stock standard cross member brings the motor/trans. up too high. Is there a different version for an automatic or should I build a custom piece?

Glenn

I was thinking of maybe cutting a piece out of the crossmember but didn't know if it would weaken the crossmember

Yes, you just need to cut about an inch back into the front lip on the crossmember, right in the middle, about a foot wide. When you do this, you remove the front supporting part for the "pad" that the mount sits on so you need to reinforce that. Pretty simple modification.

Thanks guys. That's what I was thinking of but this is my first go at this type of thing. I'll go for it now.

I ground off the front lip, cut out the centre plate, dropped it into the crossmember frame, welded it in and voila....a perfect fit!
