Timing

O.k. I was wondering about timing.

I looked at the indicator on the block and it looks like this

--
--
----A
--
--
--
----O
--
--

My first question is how do you know how to set the timing ie: 8 degree's BTDC

my second Question is what is the base timing on a 283 2 barrel?

Thanks in advance

each line is 2' the O is TDC , you should be able to see an 'R' to the left , for retard. try about 8' retard and then load it up in drive HARD on the BRAKES , and listen for pinging. keep retarded the timing until you hear the ping, then Advance it 2'.

OR ....use a timing light ...LOL !!

This is the spec for a 1964 283.

base timing - 4 degrees BTDC.

The spec for the distributor says you should be at full advance at 2000 RPM. The advance can has 15 degrees of advance.

O.k. here we go again . . .

if this is what the timing numbers are:

--12
--10
----A 8
--6
--4
--2
----O
--
--

Then I assume the 2 lines below 0 would be 2 and 4 degrees BTDC, and if that is correct how would one set the timing to say 5 or 6 dregrees BTDC when the scale ends?

not used to this style of timing marks, most I deal with have the scale on the balancer not the tab

Thanks in advance

No, the 2 lines after the "0" will be A.T.D.C...... Don't worry about those, as per se.... Use the other numbers before the 0 and all will be fine!

Yes,picture the balancer as it spins (the mark comes from the top down towards the 0 mark as it comes around) making the 2 4 6 etc happen before the 0.

I think you mean to say try about 8' advance, load it up and listen for pinging, if no ping advance some, if ping is heard, retard it some. Not the most delicate method but often used by us old guys if there are missing or incorrect timing tabs etc. Even the timing slot on the steel balancer can move.

Thanks

Randy

Thank you, I have it set about 6 degrees now and it seems fine. I appreciate all the help.
