My speedometer is broken aswell as my fuel gauge. I don't think it is my speedometer cable becuse I have taken it out and it is in one piece and still spins. My speedometer is the the extent of the far right. My fuel gauge goes to empty when I turn my car on and stays at what I think is the normal level when its off. Has anyone had these kind of problems? I was thinking of putting electric aftermarket gauges would that be practical?
If there is no ground to the fuel gauge it will go to full when you turn it on. It may be the sending unit.
Was the speedometer working at any time? Pretty simple system. A gear in the transmission, cable and the speedometer head. See if the speedometer moves when you spin the cable with a drill.
I haven't checked the ground for it yet and I spun it with a drill and it doesn't budge but the cable spins so that's why I think it is the gauge itself. The guy I bought it off said he was driving one day and it just made a *snap* and just broke.

From what you descrige it sounds like the speedometer. Maybe someone on here has one kicking around.
Try posting in the CP parts wanted section to see if someone can help you out.
I had a 58 Dodge with the same problem. The speedo itself seized up. I removed it and lubed the moving parts and slowly freed it up. It worked great afterwards..
just checked out autometer thanks for the suggestion. Could anyone give me some tips on how to hook up a aftermarket speedometer? I can't find any good info doing this on old cars
"Most GM transmissions such as TH350, TH400, 700R4, TH200, &TH250s may use the Auto Meter # 5291 speed sensor. This will simply thread onto the transmission in place of where the cable used to go. Some Chrysler, AMC, & Jeep transmissions may use the same sender. To know for sure, look to see how the cable attaches to the transmission. If it uses a large 7/8 threaded nut, that threads onto the transmission, then you can use the #5291.".....................nvm lol
