65 Beaumont heater control knob removal

Hi I'm hoping someone out there can tell how to remove the knobs fron the heater controls on a 65 Beaumont. There seems to be an opening at the rear of each knob and I've tried inserting a small bent pick device into the opening to depress a clip or ? but it does not seem to work.is there a trick to these?.thanks for any info you can provide.Darren

They just pull off.

They will be tight as hell,  and you will probably break the shafts

The shafts have barbs on them,  sort of like a barb on a fish hook.  Easy going in, tough going out.
