Looks like I have to repair an "oil leak" at frt. of pan!!! Was hoping it was T/cover seal but it looks like the frt. neoprene hoop seal didn't "seat' right on pan, & started to leak. Might be easier to "pull" the engine "AGAIN" than to just lift it up enough to get the pan off???? & struggle to get it back on w/out knoking off the gaskets & end seals in a "tight" spot. any opinions on this?????? Heres the new shifter for 5 spd.

That's too bad Pete. I think that the time and effort expended in bumping up the engine and fighting with that repair will be a frustration. If you pull the engine you will most likely be able to fix it once and for all.
Agh. Kind of like "which do you like better, a cold cup of coffee with a cigarette butt in it, or a poke in the eye with a sharp stick" eh?
Lot of work to pull the motor - unhook all cables (starter, alternator, coil, etc.), drain radiator and remove hoses (depending on clearance, maybe remove radiator too), probably remove alternator, unhook fuel line and plug it, unbolt motor mounts and bellhousing (or tranny), unbolt headers, etc. - but you are (of course) correct about struggling to get the oil pan bolts off and carefully remove the pan ... I'd try the latter, just go slow and easy, overall a lot less work. And not much torque to worry about on the pan bolts.
Shifter looks great, like your hand will naturally fall on it.
Good luck!

I got into the 52 yesterday after doing another trip, this time around the "long" block!!! & got it into 4th. gear still waiting to try 5th. Engine has all sorts of power BUT didn't sound right. Back in the shop I started pulling S/plug wires 1 at a time,no diff when #2 pulled, removed the S/plug & did comp. test [30lbs] NOT GOOD thought I'd taken a lobe off the cam but rockers were moving, Adj. the valves & BINGO too tight, re set all valves sounds "real" good now Have drained the fluids & have to decide wether to try & do pan gask. leak in the car or just "bite" the bullet & pull the SBC back out & do it where you won't be wrestling with the pan & knock the gasket & end seals out of whack!!! trying to wiggle pan back up there??????

Doesn't someone make a one piece oil pan seal/gasket for your application?
That would make it easier to do wouldn't it?
Carl, going to look into that!!! Had wondered if they make a one pc. pan gask. for small block. the frt. U seal looks like it's rolled in just abit but enough to cause MAJOR oil leak at frt. of pan

I'm pretty sure there is one and I think it's Felpro.
This is a 2 piece rear seal, right?

The Fel-Pro 1 piece for small and big blocks are NICE !! I would not build another engine without one (even though I've never had problems w/o them). They are expensive so get ready !!!

Dropped the pan "in the car" took out the frt U seal on pan & replaced w/new one as old one had a "DEFECT" siliconed it & waited for it to "skin" over. re-installed pan & just snugged to bolts till it sets up!!! Then tighten it up & wait 24hr. till it cures. Will know tomorrow when I "light" it up. Hope this works!!!!

IT WORKED!!!!! No leak after putting the oil back in & running it for a few min. with no coolant. Put antifreeze in[only had water in it b-4] & took it for a "test" drive!!!! Thought it had "balls" b-4 but now hitting on 8 it's a "WEAPON"!!!! Even though the garage is heated, didn't want to worry about a power failure & have it freeze on me. Now I can continues on w/the project "WHEW!!!!!!
