1965-1966 Factory tach installation

Thanks to member 77srx, I now have this template back again, just received it in the mail.

If anyone needs it, I am going to copy it and I'm more than happy to send it out to someone who wants to install a tach in their 66.

Old thread resurrected.

I am slowly working towards putting a factory tach in my Strato Chief. One thing I don't have, and don't know what it looks like, is the connection at the firewall.

My question is this --- Does anyone here have a 66 full size Pontiac with a factory installed tach in it? I don't want to see one that was done somewhere down the road, I need to see the firewall connection on a factory installed unit.

I used to think it was a grommet but the assembly manual drawing makes it appear like a connector.

The red arrow, (lower right side of the page) points to the spot I mean. The tach wire comes through the firewall right beside the two fuse box harnesses that exit the firewall.

the tach harness is a stand alone and goes from the coil to the tach. The area where your red arrow is pointing is the grommet that has two holes in it that the wiper harness also goes through.

Brad, I always thought that too, but take a close look at the harness, opposite end from the red arrow. The tach wire with the fuse holder is there. That's what makes me think that's the connection for the tach.

I'll see what I can find for photos. The "pink wire" is only for tachs that are TI tachs or have Transistorized ignition and needs a 12v source. Standard tachs do not use 12v source. I believe that there is a reproduction "harness" for these tachs. I'll look for that also.

Yes, I found the repro harness but it only has a short brown wire to the fuse holder, then black/pink from there to the tach. I didn't think that is right either.

And yes, the standard tach only has brown from the coil, gray for a light, black for a ground.

I just really want to make it look right when I install it.

yeah, that harness is not the correct one. It also states for illustration only. Ames part PM06245 lists for w/out TI, but no photos of the harness. I'll see if I can find some original photos.

While I'm on this topic, I'm also looking for a picture of a firewall on a 66 full size Canadian Pontiac with a factory 4 speed installation. I'd like to see the firewall area where the speedometer cable comes through.

Still haven't found anyone with a 66 Canadian factory installed tach either but I did speak to the guy who has my old Grande Parisienne and hopefully he will be getting pictures for me shortly. I just wanted to ask here in case that doesn't work out.

For those of you who have installed one of these tachs on a 65-66 full size, did you remove the dash pad to do it?

Hey Carl. I could snap pics of a firewall for 67 4 speed car (or two) if that might help? Just point me in the right direction. The car is apart right now. Its one you will definitely want to take a look at shouled you ever make it out to Vancouver.  Id also be keen to see whatever pics or info you find out on this topic. Thanks!

Could you do that please John? I can check the assembly manuals too, to see if they are similar. I suspect the firewalls are very similar because in 1977 I put factory air in a 66 and all the underhood stuff that was mounted to the firewall came out of a 67.

For anyone who cares, the fuse holder inline with these tachs is supposed to have a 1 amp fuse installed.

Carl, here's a 66 4 speed car under hood pics but don't know if they show what you're looking for. It doesn't have a tach.

Yes, that's right.

Nice car. Is that the original owner car in Ontario, seems to me he's in the southwest somewhere?

This one was at a cruise night last summer in Orangeville which is about 30 minutes north of Brampton.

Any details on the car?

Owner never came around all the time I was at the cruise night so suspect he was local and off with his buddies.

Wow, what a nice car...

It looks like a power antenna but I see it has an AM/FM and one must have been added because you couldn't get both together.

That's ok, I welcome a derail any time when it's a 66 Grande Parisienne 427.
