15,16, or 17's for my Canso

Hi guys,

I've put alot of input into sourcing a set of rims/tires for my car.

It currently has rallies all the way around and looks good, but I want a set that I can use for street/strip. I've been looking at the Torque Thrust rims and have other threads on this forum regarding that.

I have nailed down 15 x 6 with 3.5" to 4" backspace for the front and 15 x 7 with 4.5" to 4 3/4" backspace for the rear. Whatever I end up with here, the idea is to maximize the tire under the car.

I'm a bit old school and don't like the big rim/small tire look.

The reason for this thread is I have a close friend who I respect his input and he really thinks I should reconsider and look at a bigger rim.

I have yet to see a 66/67' Acadian or Nova that looks right with the bigger rims.

I'm looking for input and images on your thoughts here.

As always,

Thank you

Tony

Lots of pictures HERE of 67 Novas with lots of different wheels.

I think you should go with your gut, after all it is your car and you are the one that has to look at it every day. Check out lots of pictures but usually your first decision is the right one.

I actually like 17s more on these car... Although 15s look damn big on my car.

My car is mini tubbed and I have way more room then tire right now. I'm on the hunt for my perfect rim/tire combo and my Torque thrust 2's will be for sale...maybe sooner then later. 15 x 7 fronts 235 50 tire, 15 x 8 rear 255 50 or 60 dont remember...BFGs

(Tires/Wheels are like color...very personal choice...Make your own dicision)

I like the old school look too but painted centers like the original Torq Thrusts.

A Canso came with 13's or 14's so a 15 is already a big tire for that car. I wouldn't go bigger unless you like the "drifting" look. There isn't many wheel options for these cars unless you modify the car. Without mods, a 15 x 7 will fit but not the 15 x 8. The offset is also very important on a Canso. If the front wheel is inset too far, it hits the tie-rod end.

Is the car a driver or a show car?

Are the roads in your area generally smooth,  or rutted, pot-holed patched or even gravel?

Do you live where there are actually corners? Is handling on a smooth road surface important?

17 inchers will be much harsher than the original 14's.  In my opinion, they also do not handle all that well on rutted or patched roads.   You will duck and dive on rutted surfaces.  OK for relatively short trips but it gets old quickly on long trips.

On smooth pavement with a few corners, you'll love the 17's.

I went with 16's and they are smoother and more forgiving on non-smooth roads than the 17's, but they still announce all seams and ruts.

When I do it again, I will be going for 15's.

Your Canso is pretty limited for how wide you can go (unless you've tubbed it) so the fact that it starts to get difficult to find 16's any wider than 245's is probably not a factor.  Tire selection for 16's is more limited than either 15's or 17's.

It's your money.  Your car.  Your decision.  The above is just my opinion.  That and a couple bucks is worth about 2 dollars.

The largest set of wheels to install on any old 50's and 60's car are 15" PERIOD. Unless its a 56 Chevy 2 door post gasser with mega radiused rear wheel wells, 16 x 10 Magnesium 5 spokes, 16 X 11.00 Vintage Slicks, no front bumper and a 409 4 speed and a set of spindle mount 15 X 3's.

X2!  (The last wheels I bought I decided against 14" as they are getting hard to find.  Same thing with 16")

(Having said that, other than the weight, I think a set of 17" steelies with Beaumont dog dishes would be a great look.)
