RE: 1964 Pontiac Custom Sport Convertible

Brian. when we got our car the parking brake didn't work either. We were able to get a decent used almost-complete setup (most of the parts, and it was off a Chevy) on e-Bay for $25. Our mechanic put what we got together with what we had for a complete setup, cleaned and lubed everything up, put it in, and it's worked great ever since. I think you'd probably do pretty well doing the same thing using Rog's parts if they're not too rusted.

As for the CS rocker chrome end caps, we had one on the car and one in the glove box (broken) when we got it. I epoxied a stainless tapered-head machine screw to it, installed it w/a stainless lock washer and nut, and it's been there ever since.

Welcome aboard Brian..beautiful car...wish ours was a 4-speed..!

Hi 64 ragtop,

You and your son have the CS looking awesome!  Thanks so much for the info regarding the parking brake setup.  I am very optimistic about finding the necessary parts from a wrecker.  Getting a new front and intermediate cable is no problem, but I cannot find anyone who has the new hardward including the adjusting rod and connectors.  What other improvements do you have planned for your CS?

...yeah, and check out Impala Bob's for parts as well Brian. As for our car, it's parked "underground" and covered at the moment, even though the winters aren't too severe out here. We take it out on sunny, dry weekends. Had it out to Mission Raceway at the end of Aug. for the Jet Car Weekend. My son sponsors the Nasty Fish Race Team (www.nastyfishracing.com) out here so we ended up having a mini car show at the Investors Group tent -our '64 plus a gorgeous '60 Corvette, a super-clean '57 Chevy pickup, my son's partner's 911 roadster plus the Nasty Fish cars. Ours needs a tranny rebuild (P'glide) so this winter the NF boys will either do that or replace it with a new TH350. The engine (283) is not new but runs great (no smoke) so it'll stay the way it is for now (stock exc. for Holley 4 bbl + Edelbr. man. + Pertronix ign. and duals w/Cherry Bombs). Sure wish we had your combo - 327/4 spd. is sweet. Being a western car, is yours clean underneath? We got lucky that way - BC + AB  all its life meant no rust. Love to see more pics of your car...!! I'd be ahppy to send you more pics of ours too if you like..

Thanks rabbitt64CS.  I'll keep you posted regarding the park brake search.  Does the car you are stripping have the end caps for the rocker moulding chrome?  I require the end caps for both sides in front of the rear wheels and at the back just before the rear bumper.  Regards.

 Hey Pritch

Got a call from your buddy Barry yesterday, great guy, I have my feelers out but to no avail yet, will keep digging.

Man aren't the ones that Pontiacanada owns beautiful, wonderful work of art.

Hi 67custom,

You are absolutely right on both accounts.  Barry has been a long-time friend of mine and my mechanic since the mid 70's.  He is one of the most skilled technicians I have ever known and a super guy.  PontiacCanada's end caps are impressive!.  I very much appreciate your efforts to track some down.  Barry tells me that you are interested in owning a '64 Custom Sport.  Hardtop or convertible?  Thanks again for all of your efforts.

Hi '64 ragtop,

As mentioned earlier, I've owned my '64 CS ragtop since 1975.  I am currently doing a major overhaul.  This Pont is is virtually rust free as far as frame and body are concerned, but it is time for a fresh look.  I last had it painted in 1977.  As you'll note in some of the pics, I'm doing a fairly major job.  I've removed the front clip, painted the frame, inner fenders, spackled and clear coated the trunk, and have a complete new interior including seats, door panels, carpet, visors, door mirrors, and a freshly built 396 stroker using a brand new 350, 4 bolt main Dart block with Dart heads and the usual "bling" to dress things up.  I am having it painted a 2010 Ford color called Red Candy Metallic Tinted Clearcoat.  I am enjoying the refurbishing and will have it back on the road by next June or July.  I look forward to more pics of your CS.

Looks great !    the paint called "2010 Red" sounds better  lol lol

we don't need to hear Ford

There used to be a red in 1964  but I can't remember its name

427 Carl,

Too funny.

Yes, you are right; I believe it was called Sunfire red, but I do not care for it.  Too much orangie-brown for my liking.  This F2010 (ha ha) is a deep red which will look great with my white interior.

Hi rabbit 64cs,

Yes, you are right on both accounts.  The original color was some kind of coral and, yes, the current grille is from a Parisienne.  I have had an original Custom Sport grille since 1986 but could never get it to fit.  I have since discovered that the Canadian CS and the American Grand Prix have the same top and lower header panels and similar grilles except for the shape and location of the park/signal lights.  Finally, after all these years, I get to install the CS grille.  I purchased a complete front grille for a '64 Grand Prix and will use the headers which are pre-drilled for the Canadian and American models.  I did discover that the center nose is slightly different which is why I could never get my CS grille to fit.  It is going to look much better with the CS grille.

I found out this summer about the nose needing the correct bolt holes as well, when I swapped in a custom sport grill in my rag top ! I had a custom sport beak here, so I just made a template and drilled new holes,  had me stumped for a couple of minutes ....
Your car is going to look great !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hey, rabbit64CS,

I always had trouble with that old ram style power steering leaking.  Back in the early 80's I did the upgrade.  I did not use a kit.  If my memory serves me correctly, I believe the steering box was from a '79 Trans Am, but I could be wrong.  It certainly works well.  From center to full right or left turn, I'm about three quarters of a turn on that big old steering wheel.

I assume the parts are pot metal then?
if they are stainless.. DT stainless might be able to do them.. if they are pot metal..
I havent had enough success yet to offer casting these.. but the idea of a 3D scan to a format for a CNC machine shop could use.. is a good idea. I had my sport deluxe mold roughed out with a cnc machining center then EDM machined the details into it. These items here shouldnt need any EDM work.. but a decent range of formats from a 3D scan would make life WAY easier I would think. plus.. no chance of damaging the parts with the scanner..
