'63 Pontiac--->HEATER box to FIREWALL gasket

Hi guys..anyone know where I can get a gasket which goes around the outside flange of the heater box-to-firewall?? for my '63

Any sources or part numbers would be appreciated

I have successfully removed the old leaking heater core and installed a new one.....but need a gasket before I can push the main heater box back up to the firewall

THX Ron

If it is like the '67's, I just used the "string" like body caulking to go around the box and it seals as you tighten!

We/I used it for lots of stuff. The old guys, when I first started, use to call it dum-dum! (don't know why) Maybe that was the name of it years back?

It is plyable, probably half the size round as a pencil and just lay it on the part to be assembled, such as your heater box... It has many applications!

The stuff GM used to have was even better (my opinion) and it was a lot cheaper too. I wish I would have snagged a few boxes before they cut it.

Yes it did. I find the 3M stuff to be stiffer I'd say. To me, the GM stuff "flowed" very nicely to close up the gaps. Just fussy I guess!

Thanks for the 3M part number..we handle all 3M stuff at CARQUEST in Oshawa..so I'll get some.

My grandfather and father who worked in the GM Oshawa Car Plant in the 50's and '60's always talked about "DUM-DUM". There was always 4 or 5 rolls of this stuff around the house. My mother said there was a big roll around our house somewhere....after all those years who wudda guessed?

Well, guess DUM-DUM is the universal nick-name for this stuff from Newfoundland/Labrador to Saskatchewan at least!!!

vincejr  ya I guess it doesn't take any brains to use this stuff.I think I'll talk to my aunt who is 90 yrs old. She worked in the GM Oshawa Fabrication plant from 1939 until the eighties.

The GM FAB plant had a rich history of producing "heavy WWII trucks during the war to wooden wings for the DeHaviland Mosquito bomber.

My 1937 McLaughlin-Buick was made in the Fab plant. all the body and sheet metal was stamped, interiors sewn in the sewing room and painted and assembled right in downtown Oshawa. The straight 8 engines were made by Buick in Flint Mich

I'm about to do my heater core as well. But I'm literally on a shoe-string budget with my car and the info that 67Poncho listed shows the price for the stuff at around $30. Since I'm not doing a show car but a 20-footer couldn't I just use a silicone type sealer to make a bead where the caulking strip would go?

You could get some butyl tape from a glass / bodyshop for this as well. It comes in various sizes...just warm it up put it place on the firewall peel the paper and install the cover! Can't say that it's "period correct" though....

Home Depot will have a window caulking in strips for only a few dollars.
These are all great ideas.
