water temp senders

good morning gentlemen

I have a predicament I'm sure more than one person has encountered before. I put a small block 350 into my 55 pontiac this winter and the water temperature sender unit won't reach to the front of the block where the sender should plug in. If possible I would like to use my original gauges. how can I accomplish this??

Also I have changed from a generator to an alternator. I'm using a delco with a built in regulator how do I hook it up to my system so I can use the original gauge

thanks for the info

Are you saying the wire isn't long enough to reach the sender? If so, you can just extend it, no negative effects.

Is it a "electric" or mechanical [ capillary tube] guage??? Their is a "plug' or "port" on the left side of cyl.head in between #1 #3 cyl. that you can use with a reducer on the 350 cyl. head to either use sender switch or mechanical guage!!!!

The 461 Double Hump head was not drilled for a sender. According to my casting book (thanks to Canso Dan) only the 291 Double Hump head had the boss for the hole for a sender and some of them weren't drilled.

Not sure of the casting numbers but the port in the head started in 68.

Is there a port on the intake manifold and will it reach there?

Or - You can buy an American Pontiac gauge (making sure the sender is complete and working) and swap it out, they are longer and will reach (this is what I did). The gauges come up occasionally on ebay, you will have to be patient to find a good one.
