a buddy of mine bought a 71 or 72 about 7 or 8 years ago that was just like this.   25,000 mile little old lady car with radio as only option.   250 6 cyl, Torque Drive tranny (manual shift powerglide), manual steering, manual brakes, rubber floor mat.   He sold it a couple years later and says he always kicks himself for selling it.

In the ad it is suggested that this is a prime BBC candidate. IMHO that would be a travesty to do that to a true survivor that is representative of the vast majority of this car's production.

Do you keep it stock and drive to enjoy and just work a rag and dust the old girl off or start spending the bucks and upgrade everything.
This would be nice as is if a guy has a hotrod already , nice change from a gas pig i know got one .Im attracted to the original cars more and more. Wonder were the price will go very attractive for someone.

Personally that is a survivor car and I don't think I would monkey with it other than fixing the back bumper, redoing the trunk spatter and just detailing it. It shows a correct optional remote mirror, Exterior Decor, L22 250, M38 TH350, Wheel Covers, whitewalls plus a vinyl roof. Base interior with a rubber mat though. The correct name for the colour is Gobi Beige. That old dame has made it this far without being buggered. The car, not the original owner. Ahem...

 

I can't deny that any factory-offered small or big block would make that car perform very well, but the 250 is long on torque and combined with the TH350 would be an economical car that would keep up with traffic effortlessly (to the limit...). My brother's friend used to drift up our street sideways in his mom's 70 Nova 250 Powerglide. It was a clean low option car, but then in 1975 the friend bought his own 70 Nova. His was an unusual (for the time) spec'd car. It was powered by a 230 with a big clutch, a 3-speed with a factory optional floor shift, Exterior Decor (chrome window frames, side moldings & fender accent louvres), Rally Wheels (14x6), Custom interior with factory bucket seats. It was Desert Sand with saddle interior. I thought it was interesting the way he had it, but he went out and bought an new 350 4-bolt long block and basically built it as an LT-1, then swapped in a Muncie 4-speed.

All depends on your perspective.  Back in the day I owned a few 6 cyl Novas and always thought they were decent performers for what they were and just all around nice cars to drive. In fact I thought the sixes handled better than the eights due to improved weight distribution.

There are tons of hot rods out there, but only a scarce few originals.  If you want a hot rod, buy one that's already been hot rodded and save yourself some of the trouble of doing the switchover.

I'd keep it original if it were mine.

I owned a nice original 194 powerglide 65 Canso SD. I just couldn't enjoy it like that. Now it's a 327 M20.

10 years ago my friend in Nebraska bought a nice 195 Canso SD and said it would stay a 6 cylinder. He lasted about a week, now it's an L79 M20. I say build it like you want it, and no, I don't agree with cutting up any old car just for fun but they have to be pleasurable to drive for the owner. To each his own.

Us folks with reasonable classics with reasonable economical motors in them are laughing all the way to the bank these days. I can have just as much fun driving my 57 6 inliner as anyone with a GAS PIG putting out 350 plus horsepower and getting 10 MPG if they are lucky. With todays gas prices at just about $1.40 a litre and ethanol gas not going very far because it burns quicker than pure gas, i am real happy i have a six in my car. Six in a row, one barrel carb, 148 horsepower, 3 speed stick with a reasonable rear gear. I can use the crappiest regular fuel on earth and not have to worry about my motor pinging into oblivion. Easy to maintain, quite and real super reliable. The money i save in fuel in can put into car show fees and snacks at the many car shows i attend through out the summer. Another factor is the premium fuel and high octane aditives that some of these high output engines need to be able to run right and do not forget how much more it costs to build a high output motor compared to a bone stock engine. Of course each to his or her own and as long as you are happy and you are not going broke into the poor house because of your HORSEPOWER addiction, then enjoy and pay the piper. I for one am loving and enjoying my 148 horsepower of classic JOY. Cheers. George.

I don't know... A torquey 250 with  a TH350 in a lightweight unibody Nova would be a decent driver to me.  doubt anyone who has experienced a decent original stocker would be willing to rape that car for what it already has; a decent power to weight ratio.

I have a hot six ready to roll but I am having pangs of guilt about the modifications needed on my original stocker to accomodate the areas needed for the conversion. I don't like to butcher, and, no, I don't think an original six is worth much on the market. I just don't want to be known as the guy who wasted an original car for the mindless pursuit of a few horses. I love to see original cars.

My hot six is cool though. I'll bet once I hear it growl that I will have any doubt.

Is a six cylinder nova really worth $10,000. I think it would be a much better investment to spent that kind of money on a 1996 -1997 Z28 Camaro or Firebird Trans Am. Thaey are usually loaded with the LT1 or a six speed have 285 hp air are very quick and get 28-30 mpg on the highway.
