67 Beaumont SD 396


Just wondering about something.In 67'wasn't a 3 speed auto what most cars went to in 67' versus the 2 speed,looking at the 396 car for sale on kajiji it looks to be pwr glide,the one I ad was 3 speed,what gives?I'm not saying that ther wasn't powerglide in 67' I thought it was phasing out in most cars.Who knows the real scoop?

Yes, there was still a powerglide in 67 SD, I am pretty sure. Can someone confirm or deny that even 68 SD cars could be had as a 396?

I have seen both TH400 and PG BB 67 Chevelle / Beaumonts. My question is Why? Was the 400 not produced to the #s required at the time?

TH400 was an optional automatic. Power Glide the base in '67. I seen quite a few '67 PG cars over the years. Definitely the worst choice of trannys. I have never seen a '68 396 SD or SS Chevelle with a PG though. Anyone else?

Ah, ok. I would think that by 68 a Glide must have been pretty rare.

My mom's 72 Malibu 307 was a glide. It seems to me it died a long overdue death after 73 if I am correct.

 400hp yes, 435 no slushbox...could be wrong, not usually solid lifter engines with autos in that era.

I actually owned a 1967 SD 396 with a two speed power glide. It would shift out of first at 90 miles per hour. I could also put down about 300 ft of rubber

i still have a 396 325 hp turbo 400 out of a 66 canadian poncho wagon, there was no 66 chevelles or beaumonts with a turbo 400 as far as i know.

I am sure you are right, 67 was the first TH400 in Chevelles/Beaumonts. I wonder what the reasoning was. When you look at it, how tough would it have been to engineer a TH400 into them? Move the crossmember back, shorter shaft, all the kickdown stuff is the same as the big cars, need a different detent plate on the shifter and indicator on the console.

And by the way, be careful telling guys around here that you parted out a big block Canadian Poncho! You tend to get picked on if you talk about that!

lol the guy that owned the car was useing the body parts for another pontiac and would only give me the motor and tranny, it was a 66 two door pontiac wagon with a 396 th 400, it was way cool but there was no talking him out of the car, the car was restorable and i have never seen another like it, sad days

I went to look at a car this week and lo and behold, what did the guy also own but a matching numbers 67 SD 396 TH400 car! Needs TOTAL restoration but I checked the tag 73817, M40 among a couple of other things. Has the rear panel SD trim, one 1/4 emblem, 1/4 fins, dash and trunk emblems. Buckets and console not original, shifter was though. No side lower mouldings. Ooops, forgot to see if it still had the 12 bolt. Oh, and a fibreglass hood scoop between the 67 louvers on the hood........

NO, it's NOT for sale, ever!!!

Carl, between the two of us we probably know five guys that have been stopping in to try to by that car since around 1980. Does he still have the 69 SS396 Chevelle beside it or has it turned back into ore?

Yes, it's still there too.

I've known about that car since forever but hadn't seen it since it was on the race track at least 25 years ago. I think the TH400 console actually ended up at my neighbour's house when I was just a teen. The owner pulled it out and built a custom piece!

His son told me that every time his dad walks by the car and remembers butchering the hood to put the scoop on way back when, he just gets mad at himself!

The SD's were definitely available in 68 with the powerglide. Not the quickest off the line, but the higher horsepower versions of the powerglide trans had extra plates in the clutch packs, and a few other changes and were pretty durable transmissions.
