on a Pontiac block, #1 is the forward cylinder on the drivers (left) side.   While it also has a 18436572 firing order (same as small and big block Chev), the distributor turns counter-clockwise.

Your timing will be OFF but your "close enough" to # 1 on firing order to have it "run" Re-do it!!!!

This is correct.

someone told me that the side with number 1 will protrude a little more than the otherside....true or false?

This is wrong. It is true for a chevy but not a pontiac. The most forward is the front on the pass side bank, which is #2. The driver's side bank is set back, the opposite way around from a Chevy. The order of the rods on the crank is, front to back, 21436587. Hence the common Pontiac rebuilding error of hanging a piston the wrong way on a rod.

Number 1 is the front cylinder on the driver's side.

and timing would be 4 degrees?

Close enough to get going. Remember the dizzy spins the opposite way from a Chevy too.

thanks .....see you at pony!!!!
