68 2+2 front caliper hoses?!


Just came back from the parts store with 2 front hoses for the 68 2+2. Very odd looking hoses to me. Should have trusted my instinct cause it is costing me another trip into town. Parts guy and I ordered 68 Impala brake lines and they have a long metal fitting that if I were even able to install they would break off at the snubber. The hose I think is supposed to be about 16 and 1/2 inches long. And the caliper end of the hose is male and chassis side is female. I'm skeptical if this setup on the car is even original. Anyone out there have a photo of a 68 brake caliper and hose assembly on the car? Much appreciated!

I find NAPA 36617 or Wagner 64887. Is it one of those numbers?

The hose in the image is Raybestos 36617. The Wagner PN 64887 is the same hose. I don't see how they would work at all. The snubber would just snap it off. I might try and find a 24/45 deg banjo fitting and send it straight back. That would clear the suspension. Oh, well. Gotta make it work! Anyone else on here with a 68 and disc brakes? Wasn't that standard on 2+2's? Didn't think my car was that rare.

the hose is correct for '67-'70

can't say for sure but you may have the wrong calipers. picture isn't clear enough.

I would believe that. Would make sense, car is new to me and the brake calipers and pads look like they were just changed. Any photos of a similar setup guys?

I would think disc brakes are rare as heck on a 68 fulsize.  Do you have the build tag or GM docs to say it is an original disc car?

I bet someone did an upgrade using some 70's era parts

Lol, rare........ Great. I don't have the build sheet. I am going to contact GM vintage for the specs on Monday, but from what I can tell it's original disc front. I think the calipers are the 4 piston ones, which, according to my parts guy are obsolete and would require custom lines. Pretty sure I can rig them up easy enough. "rare" seems to have two different meanings for this old poncho.............expensive or hard to find, lol, that's okay, I'm persistent!

The hoses that I have that work pretty well are the ones I got when I bought my first disc brake set up(single piston) from SSBC.I don't know what part # they are or what they would interchange with.Sorry.....

The new hose you show looks the same as what is on my 70 2+2.  I had to replace a hose on the green/gold car when I had it, and bought 2 new ones for the convertible, but I haven't changed them yet.  The used hose you show looks like one for drum brakes.

Wow, thanks guys. Yeah, those calipers are totally different. I really appreciate the photos! My calipers won't take a 14 inch wheel. So they are either the so called "super rare" (found a post about them on an impala site) 4 piston calipers (probably BS justification or sales pitch, however The guy from Walker Auto in town said something about them, go figure) or they just fit so the previous owner slapped them on. Either way, I gotta get them done properly for the inspection. Hey, you never know. I'll post what GM vintage says after I talk to somebody. That's guys, really appreciate all you chiming in, and especially the photos!

The 4 piston caliper is supposed to take the same hose as the single piston, and yes, 4 piston B body calipers won't take any 14" wheel ever made...

you should be able to pick up rebuilt calipers at NAPA or someplace like that fairly inexpensively.   I was told the 4 piston calipers used in 67/68 weren't very good, and were replaced by the single piston calipers.

I had a 67 2+2 with discs(parts car) and it came with a 15' x 5 rally wheel.

  My 67 parisienne 2+2 has front disc 4 piston calipers. The option # J52. That looks like the right hose for the caliper.

 Couldn't tell exactly but it looked like 14'' rims in your avatar pic. 

 Have you checked for a build sheet under the rear seat, attached to the springs/seat frame??? Or possibly in the drivers bucket seat back behind the panel. It would tell you what options your car had from the factory.

just had a thought. when i went to replace the calipers at CTC they handed me a caliper that was slightly different, off a newer chev truck. the hose fitted to a different location but looked pretty close besides using a different hose. they tried to tell me it was the specified replacement. i would have had to go to the newer hose. i ended up refurbishing my old calipers.

The B body 4 piston calipers are the same as the C3('Vette) and 1st gen Camaro/Firebird ones.The only thing different are the caliper mounting brackets for each application.B body and the 'Vette are the same and the Camaro/Firebird/Nova(68 only) are the same.Rebuilt calipers are not cheap though if no cores are exchanged. Roughly around $450 each w/o cores. I know as I have 4 on mine.Not a cheap swap to say the least.But IMO well worth the money/time spent!!!!

As others have noted you already have the right hoses. The 69-70 single piston calipers are readily available. I buy them at the local parts store though they sometimes have to order them. They usually have the correct master cylinder in stock.
