'66 Olds Delta 88

I guess you guys never noticed the tear in the seat! :) It also has a '69 455 carb on it and the battery cables were both replaced! :)

And Brian painted the valve covers the wrong color....., they should be red.  :)

I'll enjoy cruising around in it for a while, that's for sure.
Whenever I sell it my buddy will get anything above what I have into it although he said to to do what I want with it and I owe him nothing. We've been best friends for a long time, stood up for each other at our weddings and even work at the same tissue paper mill for over 20 years. He has a brother Dan and his dad called me his "other son Dan" all the time.

I wrote an article about this car and it was published in Canadian Cars magazine under the title "Grandpa"s Olds" (august 2000 issue). The car was actually my buddies wife's grandparents car ( I just didn't want to get the story too long but here I am...). So her's the article:

I'll post it for sale here whenever I get tired of it or need the garage space myself.

Dan
P.S. Haven't told my wife I bought it yet.............. she thinks I'm working on it for my buddy!

Wasn't looking for a new ride but this car belonged to my buddies grandparents and he has had it for about 20 years. He seldom drove it and wanted some garage space so he offered it to me cheap. I asked him how cheap,... and he said "Cheap!"

So I bought  it..............

It's a '66 Olds Delta 88 it has 70,560 original miles on it. It is very well optioned, it has the 425 Super Rocket 370hp engine with th400 tranny, 12 bolt, power front discs, power windows and power vent windows, buckets with console and factory tach, interior lighting group, radio with rear speaker, deluxe package tray, heavy duty rear suspension.... and a few other things I can't remember right now. It still has bias-ply tires which are in good shape  but of course I'll need to pick up some better rubber for it.

We used this ride for graduations and weddings, I've been around this car for about 35 years or so. Here's a few pictures:

The car was painted in the mid-80's, Granny tagged a car with the front driver's fender ( I think she was about 86 then). The repair shop searched around for good parts which my buddy saw and told me way back then he was happy with the repair.

The car needs window and trunk seals, has a cracked driver's side exhaust manifold, it has a crack in the windsheild, and the heater core leaks so it has been bypassed for some time. The car runs great but if you floor the pedal from a standstill the car stumbles before kicking in and laying some rubber. The accellerator pump seems to be working so I'll be checking out the linkage and butterflys on the carb among other things (like a tune up).

All in all a pretty sound car though, and well worth the $1200 I paid for it! I guess it pays to have friends for over 45 years!

Thanks for looking,

Dan

Wow, that's one sweet car. And the history of you knowing the car makes it more so. Your stumble is probably just a dirty fuel system, and a carb needing a rebuild.

Just how high is "Ultra High Compression" anyway?

I was going to go through the carb and check the filter among other things. I did check the timing last night and it was spot on. We changed the fuel pump 10 years ago, could be a lot of things but the good thing is it really takes off when it straightens that issue out.

Don't know the compression off hand but it does run on Premium fuel!

My understanding is that the Delta 88's all had 425's in them but this was the top rated hp version.

Thanks for the reply, I'll post what I did to correct the stumble.

Dan

My brother owned a 66 Delta 88 back in 1976/77. It had lots of torque from the standard premium fuel 425 2-barrel & variable pitch stator TH400. The brakes were a bit weak, a common trait for those mid 60s bombs with drums all around. I think the standard engine was 310 horse, but it was strong with lots of torque. You could get up to 365 horses.

Wow, $1200! A steal for a proud car. It even has the rare buckets, console & vacuum guage.

My brother's car had an AM radio with a reverb unit & power antenna.

I seached the web and found out the '65 Delta had the 370hp and as you stated the '66 had the 365hp version of the 425. It also said it had 10.25 compression.

It's not a vacuum guage though, it's a tach. I saw one other example on ebay a few months ago.

This car stops pretty good, the power disc brakes actually feel great. I found the power steering very easy to turn too, way better than anything I had on my Cansos.

Nice ride! Reminds me of my Dad's '65 Olds. Bought it new off the showroom floor at Gorries. Came home from the hospital in it. One day I'll have an Olds!!

NICE!!! Love the BIG Oldsmobiles!! I had a 66 Toronado, and I think it had the 425 in it. That thing would roast the front tires!!!! Wish I had taken some pics of it doing that. It would drag the rear tires, no matter how hard you pushed the brake...LOL,
