1966 396 Parisienne


Howdy from Edmonton, so I`m looking at a fairly clean 67 Parisienne 4 door. It is a 283 2-spd car. I`m pretty sure the frame under this 4 door will be the exact same as the rotted out frame under my 66 big block car, except of course for the posi rear end. Price seems reasonable enough although it is a bit of a haul from where I live. Question to the board: This should be a pretty straight forward frame swap should it not ? TIA....Steve

Restore the clean four door instead of a rotten mess. Re adjust your focus on a car that is allready clean. Why not drop the 396 in that clean four door? Cheers. George.

So where is this donor car? I'll have to check but i may have a good  65 and/or 66 Parisienne 2 door hardtop frame in lac la biche.  Of course they still have cruddy old bodies on them.

Vince, I don't want another one of those things!   I just thought I could maybe  pass the 66 I got in Gimli along but I just checked on it and the frame is no good. (or at least needs a patch along the inner drivers side) My  brother has a couple of 65's so maybe they would work out.  I'll have to check them out.

 Disagree.  An orginal 396 Parisienne needs to be saved if at all possible. I've stripped enough big block cars and now realize how wrong that was.

A 67 283 powerglide 4 door is nothing special, at least in comparison.

I go with Carl S. on this one, especially if the big block car is a 2dr. "More door" is not on the "gotta have" list for the majority of people!!! Use it as a "parts car" & save the one thats most valuble!!!!

Yes, although I appreciate all advice I concour with the two previous posters. The 396 2-door has solid floors and is very clean considering it sat for almost 20 years. It needs front lower fender caps and lower rear quaters, all stuff I can do myself. I have no intention of dismanteling this original owner 1966, I currently have a lead on 2 rust free 4 door 67 Laurentians. One is a 6 banger the other is a low mile 283 or just maybe a 327. Both are in the $500 range..the V8 car will likely be the route I go as then I also get a decent SBC for one of my other projects. The frame swap is no biggie, last one I did was on a 65 Impala SS and I had it out, sand blasted, primed , painted and swapped in over the course of a long weekend...and copious amounts of beer I might add. Once I get the frame swap completed then this 396 astro jet car will be a driver. Hopefully I can get some pics up of the project as I dig into it. I will likely have some extra 67 parts up for grabs in the future....mint front clip, interior, etc.

Or, just save yourself a whole bunch of work having to strip an extra car and buy a bare frame.  I seem to recall from reading here that a '66 Chevy frame will fit right under a '66 Canadian Pontiac...

Yes, all the full bodied Chevy frames are also the same. But patience is the key...I like to collect all the parts on the cheap before piling into any one project. The luxery of having multiple projects on the go is that you don`t have to rush out there and empty your pockets on any particular one. Slow and Steady is my approach. I would much rather buy a 4-door donor car and maybe even drive it for a winter before I dismantel it. 4 door Pontiacs are a dime a dozen and you will be very hard pressed to recoup any of your investment dollars if you unwisely choose to restore one unless it is the absolute rarest of the rarest. I can`t think of one that would fall into this category...maybe a big block wagon ? But with an ever softening economy coupled with an aging population my guess is that there will be alot of really nice rides coming up for sale over the next couple of years. Even desireable 2 door cars are in for a value hit as many of them come on the resale market forcing prices down. Even now there are just so many classic vehicles for a shrinking market to choose from that 4 doors will never really be desired. Has anyone noticed the demographic shifts in Canada, ever heard of Hondas ? Even the SBC cars will fall out of favour, but everyone will want a big block. I will gladly sacrifice a 4 door for the cause. IMHO....SS

I like your approach but I find it takes a lot of room and a fairly patient spouse who understands the difference between projects, parts cars and junk.   The way I define it if its in the garage its a project, if they're parked in a line and I trim the grass around them they're parts cars or longer term projects and if they're upside down and filled with stuff they're junk.

          some folks like to spend their whole life collecting parts and never having a finished car    others like to do a project and drive the cars   what ever floats your boat

I currently have multiple drivers that I have built, 72 Elco HO 350, 72 1 Ton chevy ...full custom dually, 40 Chevy 5 window business coupe resto rod, 75  Duster 360...very fast, plus over 20 more that are slowly working their way through the program.
