voltage regulator

Hi guys.. My alt was overcharging so I got a new regulator. It,s identical except it has 4 pins instead of three. The plug has room for 4 but has only three wires. It fits just fine but does not work. Also the alt has a plug with room for 2 wires but has only 1. It is not powering the alt field but if I run a jumper to it it charges but the regulater is not in the loop. Any thoughts??  It,s on a 64 with a 230 inline.

I run into the same problem once too. If your car has an amp gauge, then you most likely got a regulator for charge light. Gauge reg has 3 pin and light reg has 4.  The 3 pin one is very hard to find since there were more GM models with charge light than gauge.

Thanks!! That just solved my problem. The 4 pin one works now by using the 3 wires in the same spot as the old one and leaving the one empty. The top one is blue for the field,2nd one empty,3rd brown for power, 4th black for the condenser. Works like a charm now.

Glad you finally joined Rob!

I've seen you out and about, car looks great!

So now you'll have to make a good post introducing yourself and you car in the Welcome Aboard forum.

Cheers, Mark
