Have not seen this in a long time!

The lifter on the right is the one that came outcry,on the left, the one that went in to replace it.

The 2nd show the concave wear,it kept spinning in the lifter bore.3rd is the repacement lifter. 4 and 5 show the lobe.

The replacement lifter wore the lobe down. The hardening process missed this lobe completely. This is a Crane brand circle track/drag cam, last picture is the grind..

Haven't seen this crap in a long time. Yes fellows ,the cam was liberally coated with Brad Penn assembly grease, lifters too before installing and properly broken in.

noBeen there , its frustrating and when you do all the right things and it still happens. Had a buddy with a BBC get 5 miles before two ground down and another with a small block Ford 4 of them toast.
I lost mine after three months and sent the cam for hardness testing and it was junk. Sent my cam back to Comp Cams and gave them the testing results and i got a full refund, kind of had them with there tails between there legs.
I did the same, used Joe Gibbs break-in oil then Brad Penn and still put a bunch of filings everywhere. I went to a roller and will never go to a flat tappet again.
The only solution IMOP is to take it apart and clean start over, i feel for ya............

Same thing happened to us on a 351 W.Did not have 100 miles on the new cam and it ate a lobe and lifter.Replaced it and even added Zink to the oil and I think It is going again. No more flat tappet cams.

I have had pretty good luck with flat tappet cams untill this one. The last time I saw this was when I was on the bench in 1977 working on a '73 Chevy crew cab with a 350. Thought stuff gets better not worsecry And we put a new Comp Cams 11-670-4 LS 6 retro in the sons BB chevy, hope it's good!

Had the same thing happen to a 454. It's the oil! Not enough Zinc additive used anymore, since newer engines use roller lifters. Comp Cam makes an additive. When you got that new Comp Cam, did it not come with a TSB for this problem. Ours did.

Yes it did. Now at oil change time the cars get 2 bottles of Comp Cams oil additive and the remainder oil. This should keep them living for a while.smile And a good quality filter also ,not a Framcry

Yes GM EOS has the required additives for camshaft/lifter life.I understand all the 'good stuff' in engine oil (zinc etc) has been removed because of Cat Convertor contamination. Even in Telus 30 &  15w40. Used  pn  380 Valvoline for years (sae 30W) and watched change from a dark brown to almost clear oil today.no Lucas makes an excellent product as wellsmile

I had that problem twice-1st time in my 427BB and second in the motor I'm running now(468).I still have the bump sticks sitting in my garage-toast.
Both Comp Cams, both flat tappet, both had Brad Penn oil as well.Gave the 427 away($500) and had present one built-twice.I feel for ya big time......
If you get a chance to put it on an engine dyno,do it.Well worth the money and it's the only way I'd break an engine in again.
