If it was original and was a W series Big Block it was a 348. The 348 was available from 1958-61. It was a 4bbl as well as a tri power engine. The tri power was rated at 280 HP. In 1962 the top engine in a Canadian Pontiac was a 327 and no big block W series were oferred at all. In 1963 the 409 was available in the Canadian Pontiac but these are few and far between. 1964 is the most prolific 409 year for Canadian Pontiacs and the dual quad  425 HP was optional. My records show less than 30 409 340 HP cars for 1964, I have no data on the dual quad. In 1965 the 409 continued with a 4bbl and special camshaft as the top offering at 400 HP.

Yes , the Canadian Poncho power team line up has always been a bit different. 1962 was the first year for the legendary 327 so GM Canada most likely capitalized on that for the Pontiac instead of a big block offering. After all 327's had as much as 300 HP in the Pontiac line.

Ray has got it right . Also, Pontiac didn't offer a 4-speed in Canada until 1963.

My 1962 Pontiac brochure only lists 3 engines: 261 six, 283 2-barrel V8, 327 250-horse V8. Transmission choices were 3-speed manual or 2-speed Powerglide. That's it. The Oldcarmanual project also has a Canadian '62 brochure that is the same as mine. It also tops out at 250-horsepower. Perhaps later in the year they offered 300 horses? My '65 Acadian / Beaumont brochure lists 250-horses as the top power for the Acadian and 300-horses as the top for the Beaumont, but a later printing ups the power to 300 and 350, respectively.

The 1961 brochure lists three engines, the 261 CI, available with either Powerglide or three-on-the-tree. Next up is the 283, available with 2 barrel or 4 barrel, either with three-on-the-tree, Powerglide or Turboglide. Finally, the top of the line engine was the 348, with either 4 barrel or triple 2 barrel, with either three-on-the-tree or Turboglide.

I can't see how the 1960 offerings would differ that much.

Perhaps we should be passing around the word that ever though the forums are broken out into specific years and then areas of the car most of the regulars don't go into the specific forums unless they are searching for something from the past. Believe most of us just hit " recent posts " and view everything since we were last on. This way we don't miss anything and it's much quicker.
