Tilden Rent-A-Car

I was thinking about flying out to Toronto on one of Canadian Pacific Air's new 737's picking up a new car for the Mrs.  What do you guys think?

Do they have an L72 427/425 hp 4 speed GP on the yard? I'd rent that...

That is SO cool Bob! You made my day.

It's a real ad. I don't know the GP's very well - was the base engine a 283 or 327?

Base was the 283. It was the only 66 Pontiac that did not have a 6 cylinder as the base engine as far as I know. Then it was 327, 396 or a choice of 2 different 427's.

I had a year old 01 Crown Vic that was from the Hertz fleet. And it looked and ran perfect in every way... a Creampuff! I wanted the Vic not the Grand Marquis, so this was how you got one back then.

So to say you'd never buy a rental is fine, probably even smart, but mine was proof some of these cars actually come out completly unscathed.

I think we'd all be surprised at just how many used cars are ex rental. So we can't completly disregard them.

The majority of 1 or 2 year old cars on car lots were rentals or fleet cars or that type of use where the owners had on interest in the condition of the car. It works fine. We sell a ton of those. So much depreciation out of them a guy can't afford to pass by a deal like they are.

But I know what Dave is saying. There's a lot of stories about rentals. However, I think of someone like our family who just rented a Hyundai Sonata 2 weeks ago. We put on about 1700 miles in 4 days. That kind of use is the best miles a car can ever see. There's lots of that type of rental events happening I'm sure.

We have quite a few used cars come in to work that were rentals and most of them seem fine. I suppose if the car was a performance rental (Mustang GT etc) I'd stay away from it.

I have a very good friend who owns 2 national car rental businesses. all the cars he has he buys brand new from a gm dealership, rents them out for 1 year then sells on his lot. they are all well maintained, as in oil changes get well scrubbed between rentals but most have the snot driven out of them. they all are great looking cars but have lots of mileage.

In 2004 I brought an Impala LS that was used for 6 months as a rental. Sure it had 35000km on the odometer, but it was a great car and drove it for 4 yrs. without issues. Great thing was I didn't have to deal with depreciation that we see with new cars in year one, and it had the balance of the GM warranty. My Dad brought three 2yr old ex-leased cars and had no problems with any of them. All these cars were bought from a dealership. I would buy another without having concerns.

Carl - I don't have the original ad, just this scan.  Got it as part of a collection of Pontiac ad/brochure/etc scans, back in 2000, from a guy named Roger in Saskatoon who I've since lost touch with.  He was a hardcore Pontiac guy, more knowledgeable than I'll ever be.  I'd have expected to find him hanging out here!

You can save the pic for free.. no Mike and Frank, no Sheldon and Scott, western hats or weird leather fringed jackets   :)

I solds rental cars that my boss bought at Chrysler auctions...   They were great..   They had better service, than the people I sold them to, gave them.. lol

Our 07 Suburban was a 1 year old daily rental with 38,000km in 2008   We love it   I change the oil faithfully every 10,000km or so  ...
