Making plans for the '58 this summer!

After a fairly long slumber (long story) I've really been working on my '58 Parisienne the last couple summers to try and get her back up to cruising shape again. As she is, around town and such is fine, but reliability has been a concern for longer trips. So far, I've put radial tires on to replace the almost 40 year old bias plies, and swapped over to power front discs. The car has a 350 in it currently that doesn't really have a lot of miles on it, but it's never quite run right. At this point, I'm ready to rip into this motor and make it proper, once and for all! I have my eye on an Edelbrock top end kit for it. A buddy of mine got one for his Camaro, and it really woke that car up. After that, I might do a 700r4 swap. The car deserves to be driven, and I just want to be able to jump in and drive without worrying about anything. Having some real muscle under the hood will obviously be a huge bonus, too...biggrin  I know it's freaking January, and doing all this is a few months away....I'm just really looking forward to this. I'll keep updating when things actually start happening. Maybe I can even make it to Plunkett's show this year, we'll see...

Don't get me wrong, I don't plan on changing the looks any, just wanna improve the reliability to the point where I really can enjoy driving her again!

Mooneyes, lake pipes, tube grille, Appleton spots, plus those wide whites on black wheels with chrome lugnuts & bullets. You certainly have captured the look from another era nicely!

Couldnt agree more,i love the hi-tech look on some rides but its also a nice to give a car personality especially from a certain era.

The Edelbrock kit you mention is a great bang for the buck add on. Its in some cases much more economical to buy new than mess with older heads etc. I havent checked with there kits but if a roller cam can be used as a option then its a good idea to look at it . The camshaft profiles are so much superior to the old grinds from 30yrs ago and the worry about zinc etc doesnt come into play.

Great ride and i hope to see the car at Plunkets show

Hi Jay. Yes we will be trying to do Plunkett's show again this year as we were rained out last year!  Great job on the car!  Bob.

Sweet, sweet , sweet smooooooooooooth ride. 1958 was a great year for GM, one of their better years in my opinion. It was also a year for hard economic times and the year mom popped me out into the world. I hear you as far as making her more reliable and dependable so you can enjoy her even more. Beautiful car brother. Cheers. George.

I had a 350 in my old merc P/up that was a "DOG" found out it had a L48 cam!!! Swapped it out for a decent Crane cam, Edelbrock performer int. & carb. & HOLLY MOLLY did it come to life!!!! So it may not take much to get this thing to perform!!!

Thanks, everybody!! As far as 'capturing the look from another time' honestly, the car has looked like that for over 30 years now. My Dad built this car over the years, and it has stayed pretty much how he left it. The only thing I added were the "spider" caps on the wheels, cuz I love the look of 'em! There were always a few mechanical issues that my Dad chased around, and they haven't exactly gotten better in the last 11 years, so that's why I'm willing to dive in to it at this point and make it right, once and for all.

Jay, when you get a chance. Tell the Poncho brotherhood the story on your sweet 58 Pontiac. The story about your dad owning it and the history in that regard. It sounds like there might be a great father/son story there. Cheers. George.

Wish my '62 looked as good as your '58. As for wanting her to be more reliable , I agree, its a sorry sight, seeing a fine looking car sitting on a hoist on a warm summer day.

Honestly, I'm ok with it. The more I dig, the more sketchy stuff I keep finding. I've definitely got a lot of work ahead of me before this car does any roadtrips.

I would rather spend a few weeks now making sure EVERYTHING is up to snuff, than have a suspension collapse on the highway. Put it this way, with some of

the stuff I found, that was imminent... no
