RE: Anyone here like Fords? 1971 MACh 1 429 Cobra Jet Ram Air 4 speed

Great car! Way to go!
I remember a couple of Boss 351's in the town where I lived.
I'm sure the 429's were quicker but the Boss 351's were really quick.

when you are looking at the 351 c heads on the mill thats now in your mustang there will be a 2 or a 4 casted into the head below the valve cover near the head bolts that will tell you if you have 2 or 4 bbl heads,, the 351 could be a good core for someones project.

good score, not that i have much to do with Fords, but the 429 in the big trucks can easily be adapted for cars unlike GM or cryco products, block is the same, steel crank internally balanced, most guys dont realize this, and they are cheap to boot .

It has 2 bbl heads with a Holley Street Dominator intake.

Should do something, one of my Pontiacs had a factory Dearborn 3 speed transmission. The early SD cars had hood scoops off Ford trucks and the Mach 1 Mustang in this thread had a factory Quadrajet carburetor. I think they are related. :)

That car is worth restoring.I have a complete JL8 12 bolt that would work nice in your Zed.Will be ready in approx. 4-6 weeks with all new parts and some original as well.Just throwing that out there.

You know, for the 1971 Mustangs the Boss 351 and 429 SCJ ran just about even to each other. The Boss 351 was lighter up front so the car would hook better, plus it was radical and would wail. It also had less friction due to the smaller displacement. The Boss 351 was rated at 330 gross h.p. but really was good for about 360 horses peak. The 429 was more of a torque monster, although in SCJ form they were something special, especially with the Factory Drag Pack. The 429 was of the 385-series family of Ford engines, which also include the 460. 427s & 428s are of the FE-series family that started in 1958 and ran from 332, 352, 360/361, 390, 406 & 427 specials, 410 (U.S. Merc) & 428.

A point about the Cleveland heads, the 2-barrel version was actually better on the average street-driven car because the valve size was more appropriate for maintaining intake charge velocity than the large valves on the 4-barrel version. This runs counter to the situation with your typical small block Chevy, which in nearly any case, larger valves are more desirable. The large valve, 4-barrel Cleveland 351 was very successful in NASCAR once the restrictor plates were used on Boss 429s & 426 Hemis to allow others to compete.

I have generally been a little lukewarm on the 1971-73 Mustangs compared to the 69/70 versions unless they were exceptionally clean, were the high performance versions or convertibles. Yours is a special car though, and it deserves to be brought back. I will say Nice Score!

That's interesting what you said about the Cleveland 2 barrel heads, maybe the motor that is in the car now will be worth something to somebody.
