Sorry to bring this up again I am a little confused about some of the information regarding the transmission swaps. Car is '62 Bonneville with a 389/auto with reverse following drive on the shifter. Is there a transmission that can be used without driveshaft modification for my car ?I have heard a newer model olds trans will work on some other models without drive shaft mods but unsure about a bonneville. I have looked at the butler and wilcap adapters. If I use a butler adapter what flywheel, dustcover do you use ? How challenging is it to set up the linkage.
I am not sure how many guys on here will know about this, although I suspect Dualquadpete will know.
I've read about doing that but not sure where. It may have been on the Performance Years Pontiac forum. I hesitate to recommend that because I hate sending guys away from here to other forums!

I think he needs the adapter to mount the starter. They had bellhousing starter mounts I think 63 and under. his block would not be drilled for a starter and would need an adapter to mount a starter with a newer trans.

I do need an adapter for the bellhousing and will be using a standard 2 boly mopar starter. Not that concerned if i do not keep the original shift pattern and am planning to keep it an automatic. The wilcap adapters will adapt to a any bowtie automatic 350, 400, 700r4 or BOP. I guess i will break out my tape measure and see what will fit without driveshaft modification. A 4 speed auto would be great, but i am running the stock rearend and high rpms with a 3 speed auto at highways speeds should not be an issue
OK if you've got the org. 62 block & go to later Trans. then you need the trans adapter kit that allows you to use the org. starter!! Don't know about Chyco starter. Whatever trans you go to, BOP you have to modify Drive shaft unless you get lucky at wreckers. You will also likely have to change the flex/plate to later style, [ I had to on 64 swap but that was a 'roto' hydro,no t/conv.] Pontiac US didn't start to drill out the blocks for later starter till late in prod. run of 1964, for 65 use. Your reverse should be at the bottom of shift quadrant, "below Low" If you get into a 700 or 200R series trans. the TVR cable has to be done right the 1st.shot or your trans will "fry" in a matter of seconds, if not right!!! The frt. d/shaft yoke is different as well + you will likely have to move the cross member or make a supt. plate. Been there & done this in the Catalina, & car club member did it on 64 Bonny to a turbo 400 series. Flex plate "MUST" be from a US Poncho, Olds won't fit!! [ Don't ask] It's not a bolt in but can be made to work & makes the car much more enjoyable to drive. I went with a Turbo 350 out of mid 70's Olds. but should have gone to O/D trans when I had 3:42's out back. T350 works well with 2:67's I now have & don't know if O/D would be good with those "TALL" gears???
