Oil leak from my Edelbrock 1721 Fuel pump?


Discovered today that a slight oil leak at my fuel pump has become bad. No driving it bad!

Kind of hard to determine where exactly it's coming from, can't see into the rear corner. But I suspect the pump body may have a small crack in it, in the lever cavity, oil side.

When I broke my motor mount way back, I noticed the pump inlet fitting was REALLY close to the mount tower (probably rubbing). When I jacked the engine up and down multiple times to install the Prothane mounts, I think the engine might have shifted, laying it's full weight on the the mount tower, via the inlet fitting to pump body.

This old style 1721 Edelbrock pump was designed such that the inlet and outlet are always 180 degrees apart. Such was the design, if I swing the clocking so the inlet might be at 7 o'clock, the outlet would have ended up close to the block, so really not a real good setup imop. Should have used something else.
The new style 1721 has the inlet and outlets separately clock-able. I've ordered one, if to just get the lines in a better (and safer) position.

Anyone ever have an oil leak on one of these 1721's. The leak is not from the mounting gasket area. Has a plug come out? The leak was just very slight, up until today.


Any ideas?

Mark, I didn't have it happen from the same fuel pump as you but it does look quite similar to the one I had. I still haven't figured out the exact cause but I think it was somehow from an oil pressure build up as I literally blew all my oil out my fuel pump going down the highway at 65 mph. Filled it up with oil after everything had settled down and everything was fine. I thought I had cooked the engine. It happened 3 years ago and nothing ever happened again. I did replace the fuel pump just to be sure but I did run it a couple days at highway speed after and it was fine. Just wondering if you can be having a surge in your oil pressure at all. You have a gauge so I guess you would probably see that. It was one of the weirdest things that has ever happened to me and I have tried to pick many guys brains about it but really haven't gotten a for sure answer. Still running the same engine.

i had something similiar in that my PCV valve either plugged up or stuck closed and my 350 blew out a couple liters of oil through the dipstick. Pretty scary to see all that smoke billowing out behind the car going down the highway. The oil burned up on the header.

From what I've gathered from the net so far, all these style Edelbrock pumps leak oil eventually. Some sooner than others.
Seems there's an internal seal of some sort that separates the lever from the pump body. It either fails or is somehow pushed out of position, and the oil leak ensues, coming out of a small vent hole in the side of the lever cavity.

It cannot be fixed, and replacing the pump is the only option. Good thing I just bought another Edelbrock!

A faulty PVC system can contribute to the early failure as well. When I finished up the details of my engine, I added a filtered breather to one valve cover, and a PCV valve in a grommet in the other. Connected it with a hose to the PCV fitting on the front of the Edelbrock 1406 Carb.

I used no science in choosing a PVC valve, I just picked one that would fit in the grommet, and, well, simply looked right.

When I pull the PVC valve out when the engine is running, the idle speeds up. so I'm assuming that when in place it is doing its job. You can hear it rattle or pulse slightly.

Am I off base here?
