Aluminum 409 Hits the Dyno

As some of you may remember, we built an aluminum 409 for the 61 Pontiac in my avatar. Here's a link to the thread...

http://canadianponcho.activeboard.com/t52256369/aluminum-409-for-61-pontiac/

Anyway, we were shooting for 800hp but we only ended up with 11.5 to 1 compression so I kind of scaled back my expectations. We went to the dyno figuring on about 750hp but hoping for a little more. The engine did way better than we expected, it made 863hp and 682 ft lbs of torque! So we're really happy!

Here's a video. (click on the blurry image) The horsepower peaked at 7500 rpm and the pull went to 7700 so the engine is screaming pretty good.

The engine is 511 cubic inches.

Incredible sweet looking and sounding engine. When can we expect to see the motor in action in that beautiful 61? Concrats on a sweet build of a sweet car. Cheers. George.

Thanks. It'll be ready to roll when the tracks open in the spring.

We started out aiming for 9.50's in the 1/4 mile but I think we might run faster than that now.

The engine makes more power than we expected and makes it at a higher rpm than we expected. We might try to limit the rpm's to about 7200 for most races and only rev it right up on those days when we think we can get a really good ET.

That engine sounds really clean and crisp, obviously built and tuned really well. Your high port heads really do the job!!
Sure would like to see some secret internal engine pictures.

Thanks
Randy

It's funny, the engine made 858 hp just like it came off the truck with 34 degrees of timing.

In the end we only picked up about 5 horsepower. It ended up with 36 degrees of timing and one jet size richer in the carbs,,, and I'll bet if it wasn't for the cool weather, the out of the box jetting would have been spot on.

The engine sounded a bit stuffed up and sluggish when we ran it on the engine stand with a set of stock cast iron exhaust manifolds (we also had a vacuum leak) but as soon as we bolted on the headers it sounded sharp and responsive.

Here's a link to a build thread on the 348/409 site that pretty much shows all the details...
