Engine codes for Canadian built Pontiacs and Chevrolet

I looked and could not find reference to Pontiac/Chevy big block suffix codes    (The letter codes on the front of the block)

There were a few conversations, about Pontiac engine codes being different for Canadian built Chevrolet engines

I have a friend who still has a rare 66 Impala wagon with 396  he says he can't find listing for his engine code    I can't find it either....

any help?    His code is T10201AR    seems to be 1 too many numbers  and no codes for AR

IA should be the correct code Carl, and sometimes they added the R or an H to distinguish Rochester or Holley carb. For some odd reason, some have it, some don't. confuse

His IA R  is on his block     not many Impala 4 speed wagons

This is kind of interesting.  My engine number on my 66 Grande is T0913IGR. (396 with Powerglide-Rochester, which is correct.)  His is T1020IAR.

My build date was October 26th and his was November 16th 1965.

I also have a late production 66 Parisienne built on June 22 1966 which has an engine number of T0325IVR (Turbo hydro -Rochester)and I have one on a stand in my garage with casting build  date of  L28-5 which I take to mean December 28 1965 that has an engine number of T0301IVR

Do any of these numbers work sequentially?  The only two that make sense are the two IVR numbers where the Dec 28 one has lower numbers than the June build one so maybe they were sequential only within the engine/carb/tranny/code.  I assume they would have had to have these codes as all these different types of power trains would have meant different cam grinds and intakes.

Any engine number experts out there?

If I understand your question right, I'll try to explain.

After the "T", the next four are month, then day. That explains the variations before the two or three letter code.

e.g. 0913 on your's is Sept 13

0325 is March 25th

Does this help, or did you already understand that part and I didn't answer the right question!

No I didn't know that.  I thought maybe they were just sequence numbers.  So the block casting date would be a bit different than theblock assembly date that is stamped on the front of the block?

This also means that there is no unique serial number for engines as it would have been possible for mutliple engines to have been made on the same day with the same Letter code.  Do i have that correct?

Not sure for Pontiac in 66 but chevy stamped the last 6 numbers of the vin number next to the build date. Making it correct for that car. Your block casting date is always before the engine assy date and before your car assy date. If it is not you have the wrong engine for your car.

Yes, that is correct for 66. I am not sure about 67, but I have a 68 engine that has the last part of the VIN stamped on the pad.

Ian, is that true for Canadian cars too? I don't know that I've seen a partial VIN stamp on a Canadian 66 block.

Hmm. Interesting again.  I'll have to have a peek at the 67 396 I have to see if it has a Vin on it.  I know there are no other numbers stamped on the 66 ones I have.

Not sure on the Canadian cars in 66. I know my friends Canadian 67 Malibu ss did. I have a 66 impala 396 block that is a T0215 IVR and the serial number on it but that is an American build car.
