CARS IN ALBERTA ARE SOLD WITH A BILL OF SALE. IF YOU HAVE A BILL OF SALE FOR A CAR PURCHASED IN ALBERTA YOU WOULD HAVE "OWNERSHIP". A BILL OF SALE CAN BE A FORM PICKED UP AT A REGISTRY OFFICE, SIGN THE BACK OF YOUR REGISTRATION SLIP OR WRITE ONE OUT ON AN OLD CIGARETTE PACKAGE(I'VE DONE THIS...LOL!) OR ANY SCRAP OF PAPER YOU HAVE. IF IT HAS THE REQUIRED INFO AND SIGNATURES IT IS A LEGAL BILL OF SALE. NO TITLES HERE EITHER. ALSO, NO TAX ON USED CARS UNLESS BOUGHT FROM A DEALERSHIP. IF BOUGHT FROM A DEALERSHIP YOU PAY GST.

Interesting    So if I buy a 2014 Pontiac Strato Chief it has no ownership?     just the bill of sale?    Do children born there get a birth certificate?

biggrin YES CARL, OUR CHILDREN DO GET BIRTH CERTIFICATES! IN RELATION TO A CAR, WOULD A VIN# NOT BE A "BIRTH CERTIFICATE"? THE GOVERNMENT HERE DOES NOT CARE WHAT YOU HAVE FOR VEHICLES, THEY ARE NOT OUT TO SQUEEZE TAXES AND FEES OUT OF YOU SIMPLY BECAUSE YOU BOUGHT OR SOLD A CAR. YOU JUST NEED PROPER INSURANCE AND REGISTRATION IF YOU ARE GOING TO OPERATE IT ON A PUBIC ROADWAY. IF YOU TRIED GETTING REGISTRATION FOR A VEHICLE THAT WAS REPORTED STOLEN, WHEN THE REGISTRATION OFFICE ENTERED THE VIN IN THE COMPUTER TO TIE IT TO YOUR PLATE (IT IS ACTUALLY THE LICENCE PLATE # THAT GETS REGISTERED TO THE CAR), IT WOULD COME UP AS STOLEN AND YOU WOULD HAVE SOME EXPLAINING TO DO. DO YOU GET "OWNERSHIP" OR A "TITLE" WHEN YOU BUY A PACK OF GUM? NO YOU GET A RECIEPT. THAT IS BASICALLY WHAT THE BILL OF SALE IS, IT JUST SHOWS THAT YOU BOUGHT AND PAID FOR THE CAR. IT IS UP TO THE BUYER TO DO DUE DILIGENCE AND CHECK THAT THE VIN HAS NOT BEEN REPORTED STOLEN OR HAVE LIENS OR SUCH THINGS AGAINST IT. THAT CAN BE DONE AT A REGISTRY OFFICE OR WITH THE POLICE. IT IS AN EASY SYSTEM. I DON'T HEAR OF MANY PEOPLE EVER HAVING ANY PROBLEMS WITH IT.

Mike is correct, we do not have titles here in Alberta.  In 2010 I bought my 72 GMC pickup from a buddy of mine with the standard Bill of Sale template provided by Alberta Registries - but realistically anything would have been sufficient.  He bought it at a farm auction, again with only a Bill of Sale.   Alberta's database goes back to about 1982 when it was computerized, and the truck had not been registered in Alberta in that time, nor in another province.   As the VIN was not in Alberta's database, nor did it show up as stolen in another province, to register it I just needed to have it pass an Out of Prince Inspection (OPI), which is pretty much standard safety stuff.   We put all new brakes on it, replaced all the vacuum, fuel, heater and rad hoses, replaced the windshield, etc and it passed the OPI.  Then took the OPI report to the registry (which here are privatized so they're all over the place) and walked out with a plate and registration.    I might also add that I was able to add it to my auto insurance policy even before I bought the truck.   Proof of insurance and the OPI were required to register it.

So, if someone buys the Firebird body, they're just going to get a Bill of Sale which may be the standard template, or on a napkin.  This shouldn't prove to be a problem, when Hillar bought the green/gold 2+2 from me we just used the standard template.
