1962 acadian just aquired


Hello everyone,

thanks for having me on this forum, its a pleasure to be here with all the knowledge and expertise advice.

Let me first start off by telling you that I have acquired a 1962 acadian beaumont convertible, I traded my brother for a 1969 buick skylark 400 gs( he said I looked like an old granny driving it) guess Because I'm a smaller guy, so he says the acadian would suit me better. 

I put 3000 into that buick so I agreed only if he would get the top on the acadian replaced, get the motor running up to snuff with new push rods,spark plugs and  wires ,distributor and points,new carburetor and brakes. I figured that was a good trade.

I figured that I would do all the work myself because I would be learning alot about my car and whatever I didn't know I would youtube .

. It's actually been quite a good starter car to learn on since there is all that room under the hood. I've never been mechanically inclined but I've been told that the 250 straight six is a strong and sturdy  engine with the only issue so far is finding parts for the bugger.you can forget Canadian tire or part source witch happens to be across the street.

My issue now is getting it to stop. It runs nicely but these dam drum brakes are getting a bit difficult. I've bled them three times already and still no pressure in the lines. I've had the back two drums machined and new shoes put on, now I'm trying the front but the drum is giving me a hard time, tried the taps with the hammer but no go, and partsource don't carry a drum puller.

The cylinder on the back seemed a bit wonky ,maybe that's the problem.

Only thing is I might be getting over my head.youtube can only take me so far.

I'll be posting pics of it shortly and maybe get some insight.

Welcome here Tony. An Acadian convert is a great car, rare too. Good score!

Is it possible your brake master cylinder is bad, thus no pressure to the lines? Has the car been parked for a long time? That will often ruin a brake cylinder.

Ok, cool.

Keep an eye open in the "Lounge" section here. The Manitoba group from here often gets together at the Robin's Donuts just north of the Mint. We typically discuss it in the lounge for about a week prior with the date and time to give everyone a chance to show up. It's normally a weeknight and goes from about 7:30 to 10:00. Usually we have about 8-10 guys show up.

I guess if you had someone helping you, you could undo the outlet pipe on that cylinder and have someone hold a hose into a bottle while you pressed the brake pedal to test it. You'd need to get a short piece of brake line with the proper nut on it to screw into the master in place of the one that is screwed in there now.

Replacement cylinders don't cost a lot anyway, so it might be a good idea to change it since it's been sitting a long time.

don't just replace one cyl replace both
they are not cheap (around $70 each) for 62-63

64 and up are different and cost around $10
you can always try a rebuild kit .

I used to have to hone at least one after it sat for 6-8 months
now i take it out and drive it at least one a week unless salt on the road
i would always drive for at least 15 miles then see which wheel (drum) was hot
or if it pulled left or right.

If I remember correctly? on a 62 you have to remove the centre cap,cotter pin,& nut to remove the front drums.Make sure your wheel bearing adjustment is correct when reinstalling drum,via the nut.

Yes. The buick didn't have disc brakes though and the body on this acadian is in better shape.

I might miss feeling that power and rumble of the v8 instead of this quiet 250. I'm guessing ill save alot on gas thoughsmile

I think you got it! I didn't take of that center cap! I thought it looked a bit different from the back brakes.

I did the back ones last year so I wasn't sure.

Ok off to the garage in a bit.

Thanks for the insight, the acadian also came with a box of spare parts inside there were 2 small boxes of cylinder repair kits

So I can at least change two.

start with the cylinders that look wet if you've only got 2 kits.

replace all 4 wheel cyls,& master cyl .I think 62 only has the single reservoir for all 4 wheels.

rebuild kits are cheap. if you only have 2 do either the front or rear.
doing just one may cause your wheels to pull or break un-even
front more then rear..
dragging usually is on the rear causing drum to be very warm to the touch.

Thanks guys, I managed to take off the front drum ( centre bolt) was the problem. Iwas banging on that thing for 30 min. For nothing.glad I didn't crack the drum. Anyways the cylinder was dry and it looked like there was plenty of shoe left so im going to rebuild the rear two cylinders.

How much work would that be?
On youtube a guy was boring the cylinder with some tool that I don't have and I'm not sure if that's necessary
Would it be wiser just to replace them?
I'm also replacing the master cylinder

you need to hone the cylinder out before you put the kit in.

I live in winnipeg too (St.James) and am looking at a 62 convertable (as soon as it dries up a bit more) I have the factory service Manuals for 62-65 nova on cd and a 62 acadian shop manual (real paper) and can provide you with all the service info you need. send me a private message and I'll meet with you A good book is the best startbiggrin

Very cool, Dude !! I used to have a 62 Beaumont and a 69 Buick GS 400 with the ram air hood. Wish I had either one today. The Beaumont had air in the lines and I always used to push hard to the floor and then gently on the second stroke. Worked like a charm. Loaned it to my Uncle once, and forgot to tell him. Not so good. If you weren't gentle on the second stroke, it locked up and skidded.
The 62 Beaumont was basically indestructable. That six and two speed tranny wouldn't die. It was one of my first cars. Treated it hard, but it just kept going. Got it for free in the late seventies. Sold it for $100. After a couple years, bought it back for $10, got it running again and gave it to my sister. She drove it for a few years and sold it.
I think the 62 Acadian was a nicer looking car than the 69 GS. Just one man's opinion. Good score, buddy :)
