Got my 80 Turbo T/A Pace Car out of storage

image.jpg

I've been waitin all winter to go for a spin, so yesterday I got to drive my Pontiac. This one has been parked since 1995.

Fresh gas, fuel filter, battery, tires and away I went! I was a bit nervous it was going to die on the roadside but it made the 25 mile journey to my friend Scott's shop for a tuneup and a bit of clean up work. Original paint, interior etc. This was a locally sold new in Woodstock car that had 2 previous owners. First one traded it in 1983 at the Pontiac dealer in Ingersoll, second owner bought it and kept it til last fall.

wish I had some vacation time so I could drive it to the Indy 500 next weekend!image.jpgimage.jpg

A true beauty, there was a non pace car version sat, yes sat, beside a dumpster, a couple blocks from my home, for years, then poof, disapeared.
A guy in the Okanagan has a 455 bird with twin turbos from those 305 cars, my my it do fly, all home built adapters to make it work.

In addition to your tune-up, do yourself a favor and change all the rubber hoses (vacuum & fuel lines) as they get pretty brittle over time.  That's one of the first things I do on these older cars.

Yes that's a good idea. I think  I need to get the waste gate unsiezed too.

image.jpgI've been reading over the winter about some mods to the engine to make it perform a lot better. Apparently a cam change is #1, better exhaust, port the heads, better waste gate, and some turbo improvements can really wake up the 301T engine.
These were berated when new for poor performance. All lot of it had to do with getting them to pass emissions.
Turbo technology wasn't very well developed in 1980. This was the 1st V8 Turbo car built in America. I remember well as I raced a new one against my 78 T/A with a slightly modified 400, and I beat the Turbo 3 outta 3 times.
No real contest but I've always loved the look of the Pace Car.
So now I have to keep from straying away from originality as this car is a time capsule back to my youth. It's never been touched other than maintainence, but it needs some attention.

Love that mid 80's Kenwood deck! Was there a Def Leppard cassette in it?

No it was Blue Oyster Cult, Agents of  Fortune!

Funny thing is most of my old school buddy's  say leave the Day 2 Kenwood

I think the 1962 Olds Jetfire was the first American V8 Turbo. I've had a few Turbo Trans Ams, not pace cars, and liked them a lot!! One was much faster than the others for some reason and would lay a long patch. I think with what we know about turbos today, one could be tuned to run pretty good, starting with the exhaust.

Thanks
Randy

I forgot about the Olds, as did a lot of journalists! I thought it was a V6.

Nice car. I also say leave that Kenwood in place, you'll get a lot more comments that a factory deck!

What are the two switches on the black part of the console for?

I remember seeing a Jetfire at a cruise night. It had a bottle of "Rocket Fuel" which was basically an alcohol/water mix that would help eliminate pinging.

One is for the  Stereo Boost amplifier , other is for the  hood "Turbo Boost" lights. Yes they are factory installed. I've never been a fan of the hood lights, but they are original.

Hey Todd didn't the fuel injection  283 Chevs have that  also?

pinging was a problem on  the  Turbo cars also. The 81s had a early type of knock sensor but not my 80.

The 301 was a lightweight version on the Pontiac V8. As a result they were not that strong and cracks could appear in the block if flogged. The turbo version was different, it was a stronger block with additional mass in the main webs & deck.

The nice thing about turbos is that you can crank up the boost a bit and get more power, just make sure to run premium fuel.

A guy in my neighborhood picked up a non-turbo 1980 Trans Am that was very well preserved. It is wearing the original yellow paint. Although his isn't a turbo, it is a WS-6 car with 4-wheel disk brakes & 15x8 snowflake wheels plus the low restriction exhaust system. No a/c (it was actually sold new in the Yukon!)

That's a nice looking T/A. The Turbo blocks had extras that didn't go into the regular 301 and the crankshaft was different also.
With some modern technology it shouldn't be hard to vastly improve them. I just don't want to stray to far from original.
It will never be a fast car and I'm ok with that. If I need to go fast it will be in a new style Hemi.

I drove by there Victoria Day Monday and thought that was the tail end of your car. I had taken the family for a drive in the Beaumont up to Stratford. That is a great looking car, always liked those hoods.

Since my 82 was not a turbo, just had the mesh which at least let some air in there.
